A ghost story
Once upon a time I met a man in a journey to my homeland. He was a salesman, in upper middle age, and a bachelor. His name was James and he had a twin brother, John.
The two brothers worked well together. They had a business together, but lived in different parts of the town.
A week before James and I would begin our trip John came and visits his brother. I was there too, so I could help him with the preparations for our journey. When John had visited his brother for only two days he said to his brother: “I do not feel very well, James. Not for I think it is something serious, but I feel a little unwell. I think I am going home again and let my old maid take care of me. If I get well before you leave I will be back, and if I should not you will have to come to me.” James answered that he willingly would do that. And so they shacked hands, with both hands like the use to, and John’s old-fashioned wagon drove forward. And so he went home.
Two nights later I woke up from my good sleep, it was James that waked me up. He came in to my room with a light candle, sat on my bedside, looked at me and said: “I think I am sick. I am not embarrassed to say to you that I think I caught a sight of my brother’s ghost. You come from a reasonable land where one tries to explain and sort out mysterious things that happen if they can be sort out.” I can admit that the blood in my body pulsate faster when I heard about the ghost.
James looked at me right in to my eyes with a steady look. He wanted me to see that he was absolutely calm. “I have seen my brother’s ghost” he repeated. “I sat up in my bed, because I could not sleep. Then the ghost came in to my room in white clothing. It looked at me with a big seriousness, went to the table, looked in some papers and disappeared out through the door. I am not crazy but I see this as a sign that I am seriously sick. I need a doctor” I get up immediately, got dressed and asked James not to worry; I should get the doctor myself.
Just when I was going to leave somebody knocked on the door. When we opened the door a man was standing there. “Are you James” he asked. “Yes, that is me” James answered. “And you are my brothers servant, Robert, am I right?” “That is correct sir, and I am afraid that I have some bad news. John is very sick. It is so bad that he might die and he want to see you, sir. I have a wagon here. Please come right away, you have no time to loose sir.” James ands I looked at each other. “This is very odd” said James. Then he looked at me “Do you want to follow me to my brother?” I said yes, of course .
When he came in to my room he only had a pyjamas on so I had to help him with his clothes first. Then we hurried to the wagon, I can assure you that the horse galloped all the way to Johns house.
I followed James in to his brother’s bedroom. I saw and heard all that happened there. John lied in his bed. His wife and children was there, they had been there the whole afternoon. Just like his ghost he was dressed in white and just like his ghost he looked at James with a big seriousness. It was nothing special wit that, if yo...
