I read Sidney Poitier''''s book "the measure of a man, a spiritual autobiography" and because this book is an autobiography, he writes about how he grew up in Cat Island (1927) in the Bahamas to how he came to Miami, Florida and later on to New York. Poitier began acting after the war,He also tells us about that. And of course about when he was the first black man to win a Academy Award for best actor. He writes about the hard and the good things, and how he had to struggle to get to this point of his life.
He also gives credit to his family and his childhood on Cat Island for helping him and teaching him what''''s right and wrong and taught him self-worth that he has never surrendered, and that has dramatically shaped his world. Although the book goes into much detail about the hows and whys of his life, I shed tears when I read this book. But for me, Poitier is often found in a reflective, philosophical mood, taking on the role of a man not only re-examining a long, accomplished life but looking ahead at the steady approach of his own mortality. Yet he appears to the other readers to be someone who has few regrets about how he has spent his time on earth.
"In the kind of place where I grew up," recalls Poitier, "what''''s coming at you is the sound of the sea and the smell of the wind and momma''''s voice and the voice of your dad and the craziness of your brothers and sisters...and that''''s it." Without television, radio, and many other things, he could enjoy the simple things, endure the long commitments, and find the ”true meaning” in his life.
The Measure of a Man captures the essential Poitier.
When I read this book, it was like his sentences was a floating poem and he can truly tell a story like a fairy tale. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who likes to read an autobiography. This book really opened my eyes. It showed me that the good things in life can''''t be bought. It showed me what the love you get from your family can do to you. Everything that you want in life, you can get. But only if you have the will, strenght and the loyalty. This book is without a doubt the best book I''''ve ever read.
