“Drugs or Me”
This text is about a person who is close to someone with an addiction to drugs and he or she wants the person to stop because he/she can’t recognize him anymore. “If only you could see the stranger next to me” and this person keeps promising he will stop: “You promise, you promise that you''''re done. But I can''''t tell you from the drugs”. I almost get the feeling that the person without the addiction is “addicted” to the other person: “Stay with me. You''''re the one I need”. Because of this, he or she is willing to stick with him through it.
“Take me, I need your hand, so far, to pull me up.” Here it seems like the person with the addiction is answering telling the other person he needs help, to pull him up from the hole that they have dug together. The addiction is like a hole and they are just going deeper and deeper down, both of them: “Dig a great big hole. Down and in this hole, we''''ll both go”.
“Hate Me”
In the beginning of the song, the object of the song’s mother voice can be heard as on an answering machine. She is says she is worried, and wants to know if he is all right.
He has been sober for three whole months, and his mother helped him through that. However, this was too hard on the relationship and it seems like he wanted space, so they haven’t talked in a while.
He also says: “The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing that I won''''t touch again”. So he is doing better and he has battled his addiction, but now he is all alone, but he does not want her back: “And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind”. He wants her to hate him, to forget him and to move on: “Hate me so you can finally see what’s good for you”.
Comparison
Both songs are about being addicted to something and how that affects other people. The relationship between the two people in the first song could be parent and child, brother and sister, two friends; it could also be boyfriend and girlfriend. I think that’s more apparent in the second text that it is about a mother and her son.
Another thing that is different, is the progression of the addiction, the person in the first text is still very much a drug addict, whilst the alcoholic has mange to battle his addiction.
The two people in the second text have gone their separate ways and the two people in the first are still together. However, the outcome in the first texts seems to be more preferable. He might not be talking...
