Leif Eriksson or Leif the Lucky was born in 975 on Iceland in Ericsstadir, but he grew up on Greenland. Leif Eriksson had two siblings, Torstein and Torvald. His dad was one of the most famous Vikings; Erik the Red, he discovered Greenland. Leif was a strong and cunning boy who loved the sea. He sometimes sat and watched when the ships came into the Dock on Greenland. Leif’s dad Erik the Red was send away from Iceland for 3 year, for killing two of his neighbors.
Like all Vikings Leif grew up with another family. Thyrker (German slave of Erik the Red) who Leif lived with thought Leif how to read and write Runes, how to speak the languages of Ireland and Russia, old Viking sagas like: how to recognize valuable plants and how to be a skilled warrior. Because of that Leif grew up to be a famous Viking like his dad. A tradition for young Viking men was making a voyage back to the land of their ancestors, which was Norway for Leif Eriksson. When he got to Norway he stayed with King Olaf of Norway and became Christian. When Leif came home to Greenland he taught the Norsemen about Christianity.
Sometimes when Erik went out with his ship Leif went with him that could be why some of Leif Eriksson’s most known accomplishments were, discovering the North East side of America in 1001. When he was only 24 Leif began his journey to North America and he reached America when he was 26 and named it Vinland or Wineland. He was the first European to reach North America, 500 years before Christopher Columbus discovered ´´The New World´´.
The Vikings used different kinds of weapons and shields in lots of colors. Bow and Arrow were about man length, the handle was made of hard wood or animal horn and there were manly 6 different kinds of arrow heads especially for war.
Swords, was the Norsemen’s most importuned weapon in battle, the Viking swords were about 80 cm long, they were usually very beautiful for they were decorated with gems and gold, some of the swords were made in middle Europe and send to Scandinavia.
Axes, there was an old saying “Swords for playing, axes for serious business”, axes was made with heavy metal which was easy to form, Vikings warriors which went by foot in battle, generally used axes. The Spears were mostly used by riding warriors, the spears had a thick and a thin blade, and the thick blade could also be used as a cutting tool. Shields, were always round, about 60-100 cm in diameter and made out of wood which was painted in many different colors and had a round metal bar around it to make the wood not break.
None of this could have happen if he hadn’t had his Dragon ship. Viking ships were about 15-30 meters long, made of wood and build to be swift and were good to trade with. There were many kinds of ships like; Longboats which required 45-50 men to paddle and Dragon ships with an animal head or dragon.
How the Vikings looked was vary important for them, everyone had a own comb. The men wore different kind of long pants with a long shirt healed up by a belt and shoes made of skin. The women had a long skirt and they wore jewelry every day. The girls wore a dress and an arm ring, the boys had the same as the men but they could have a hood and they had a wooden- sword.
Leif Eriksson even has his own day; the 9th of October is Leif Eriksson Day it’s healed in honor for Leif for when he discovered Vinland (’’The New World’’). If I could ask Leif Eriksson some questions I would like to ask: What did he do on an ordinary day. If he knew why there were only 16 different Rune symbols. Leif Eriksson died in 1020.
I found this person interesting for he lived in the Viking age which was extremely long ago and we ...
