How would you feel if you were a farmer, and your only way to make a living was suddenly taken away? Well for millions of farmers in the 1930’s, this was the case. This was because of the Dustbowl, a period of time during which there were extreme weather conditions such as blizzards, droughts, and dust storms and the land was too dry for farming, thus making agriculture impossible. The dustbowl was an indirect reason for the stock market crash of 1929, which caused the Great Depression. Both the Great Depression and the Dustbowl had many causes and effects, making history in the United States.

The Dustbowl began with, believe it or not, great prosperity. The areas around Texas and the panhandle of Oklahoma were labeled as the most fertile places in America. The farmers of that area, becoming cocky, plowed and used up land that shouldn’t have been used, ensuing the tragedy of the commons: Overuse. Soon the land could not handle all of the farming and the crops died, trying to restore the land to its healthy self. Although the land attempting to return to normal was good, it would take years and cost farmers all over the U.S. millions of dollars. The Dustbowl affected nearly everyone of every class because of loss of money, and it ruined land in the Midwest. Dust storms swept across the Great Plains and killed small animals and forced many people to shut up their homes, which became stuffy and hot because of the humidity and dust that constantly lingered in the air. The Great Depression was also an effect of the Dustbowl.

The Great Depression started with the stock market crash of 1929, which was caused by the loss of millions of dollars from the Dustbowl. The Great Depression put millions of U.S citizens out of work and forced an extreme amount of them into poverty and homelessness. The Great Depression is one reason why we see so many homeless people on the streets of large cities these days. Some people were luckier and got to keep their homes, although they were still very poor.

As we researched the Great Depress on and Dustbowl we really learned how to appreciate what we already have today. Maybe we all get disappointed when we don’t get that new bike we wanted for Christmas, or those new jeans everyone is wearing, or when we are too lazy to clean our room, but try to really think about those who didn’t even have a room to clean or jeans to wear, or even a road to ride a bike on. Reading about the great depression and the dust bowl really made us think about what our lives could be like. Maybe it sounds selfish to feel happy for what you have and someone else doesn’t, but it does show that you can appreciate what you have. And maybe that is one of the keys to happiness today, so people will be happy with what they have, instead of getting jealous a...
