In the book The War of the Worlds the author tells us what he was involved in when the aliens from Mars came to earth with death, destruction and extermination. One of the marsians vehicles hits not far from the authors house. After a while, it proves to contain a tentacle equipped creature. Later, more vehicles struck in the neighborhood of London, and together the aliens built strand, tall three-legged war machines, as with laser beams set fire to everything around itself. They also use a form of heavy, black gas that kills all the people who happen to inhale it.
The creatures in their war machines migrate towards London. We partake in Londons destruction, through the narrator who retells his brothers experiences, because as of the time of the attack the brother lived there. It will in time become apparent that the creatures' goal is not only to kill the humans, but also to eat them.
The situation seems hopeless for the humans, despite our guns, but it turns out, however, that the creatures are intolerant of bacterial flor, and it will finally be those that prevent the aliens from rampage and kills them.
The narrator meets a proponent of Darwinism, and believes that in a new human civilization only the useful and the strong may exist with, while the rest may as well just stand like cattle in the aliens' camp, waiting to be eaten. The protanogist also encounters a priest, who, faced with these dizzying perspectives loses his mind, prays to God at one moment and in another other moment becomes hysterical.
The typical language, formed as a ’testimony’ of personal experiences, is charming. It gives the reader great benefit, even if I never get scared. But I can, however, feel a great excitement! Nor, does Wells draw on the story. He ...
