THE PHOTOGRAPHER 2: THE DARK ROOM by Barbara Steiner


The Photographer 2: The Dark Room is about a 16-year old girl, Vicki, who lives in a small town in North America. One day, a new boy starts in her class, David Altman. Weird things starts to happen in the usually boring, quiet town and Vicki has a feeling it has something to do with David Altman, but she needs proof! David and Vicki both have the same interest: photographing. They go to the same photographer class, and David´s big interest is to take pictures of beautiful people and is very talented. Vicki´s best friend Becky gets sicker and sicker the more pictures David takes of her, and eventually dies. Vicki is heartbroken, and wants to find what went wrong. The doctors did not find any symptom. She gets caught in David Altman´s home; in his dark room. She finds pictures of all the sick girls… David sets everything on fire, and Vicki´s trapped in there, but is saved. What is going to happen to David Altman…? The author´s name is Barbara Steiner, a famous writer who is known for her writing skills.

The things that made the book interesting were that all characters seemed realistic, and the events too. It was full of imagination and suspense, and the writer put the words very well. Vicki was an interesting character, who showed strength and courage. Most of the setting of the book takes place in a high school. The books starting is very good, the events start right away and it doesn´t get boring like some other books. The book´s ending is really good! It ends in a mysterious way... It doesn´t contain illustrations, but is still very interesting. It contains interesting information about all the characters and the setting, but not too much and it is very easy to follow since it is well written.

The author wanted to tell her readers that you should watch out and not trust everyone. Also, to take care of the ones you love, and be happy for every day that goes by without difficulties. Vicki showed her strength when she was the only one believing that the strange things going on were because of David. It shows that a shy person like Vicki, can become strong and brave.

SETTING
The book´s events take place in present time. It was first published in 1993 in New York. Since Vicki goes too high school and the book is about her and her friends mostly, a lot of the setting takes place in her school, but also downtown and parks. The setting helped the quality of the story, because the author explained very well so it was easy too understand. Because Barbara explains the setting in the story, it makes it easier to understand where it takes place and what takes place.


THE AUTHOR
BARBARA STEINER was born in Dardanelle, Arkansas, and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas. After receiving a bachelor´s degree from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and a master´s degree in education from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, Barbara taught third grade for four years in Independence, Missouri, Lawrence and Wichita, Kansas, and was a reading specialist in Nederland, Colorado, before becoming a full-time freelance writer and author.

After publishing over one hundred articles, stories, and poems in national magazines, Barbara turned to writing books for children and young adults. She is the author of more than sixty books, fiction and non-fiction, picture books, middle grade, and young adult. She teaches writing classes for children and adults and workshops all over the U.S. and Mexico. She is a member of the Colorado Authors´ League, Society of Children´s Writers and Illustrators, Mystery Writers of America, and Western Women in the Arts. She is the current president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Sisters in Crime. Her hobbies are tennis, travel, and photography.

FAMILY: Barbara has two daughters, Rachel Anne and Rebecca, and three grandchildren, Max, Kevin, and Meghan. She lives in Boulder, Colorado, with three cats who help her write.
