Meeting the textile challenge: design and development of a dispenser for hand drying material in public washrooms

SCA, Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget, is a global company operating in areas concerning paper mass, personal hygiene products, packaging and soft tissue in over 50 countries. To companies and institutions where the consumption is "away-from-home", AFH, SCA wants to be able to offer complete wash room solutions and for this European segment, Tork is a very strong SCA brand. Today the company does not have a product nor, understandably, a dispenser that directly competes on the textile hand wiping market and wanted to investigate the possibility of developing and launching such a product. During this project, the method of systematic product development was used to organize the different project phases, starting with the information gathering. Through benchmarking,interviews and observations, the customer and user needs were identified which formed the basis for the product development. The problems with the current dispensers were analysed and the information was used as a guide in the problem decomposition. The pre-study led to a concept generation phase which resulted in two final concepts, chosen together with mentors, that were shown to a focus group for evaluation. The preferred idea was further developed until it was finally presented to the Product Development and Innovation Division at SCA as a functioning prototype. Besides the dispenser, a surrounding service that would appeal to the users of the textile system was developed to help in the possible launch of the new Tork product.
