During the last few decades more and more women have migrated across the globe. Individual reasons may differ, ranging from seemingly voluntary and paid labour migration to involuntary and unpaid trafficking. With regards to each of these, particular groups of female migrants form parts of particular work forces. On a societal level, there are several relations contributing to this development, economic inequalities and sexual division of labour being perhaps the most obvious. For conceptual purposes love and marriage can be placed in between, as it is unpaid yet voluntary.Since the latter half of the twentieth century, new groups of foreign women have emerged as wives and common-law spouses of Swedish-born men. Most prominent are Thai women, as well as Filipino and Russian women. Generally speaking, different groups of female migrants can be said to establish themselves under different conditions. Most notably, this shows in figures of divorce after residence permit has been issued, where for instance a Russian woman is a lot more likely to divorce her husband than a Thai woman. Where one is typically a highly educated woman, already with a career of her own, the other may well have a background in family farming or other unpaid work that translates into low income jobs on Western labour markets.As our study points out, economic resources and work opportunities play significant roles in deciding who does what at home. It will dictate the terms of any relationship, inasmuch as the family, as we know it, is built around a provider in order to accommodate society’s needs.
