This is a book I normally wouldn’t read, but I was walking around in an old bookstore when I saw this one. It was mostly the title but also the front page that caught my eye. I’m a bit of a poet, and a beautiful sentence is like candy to my eyes. The cover was red as blood with only a black crying eye on it. And it only costed 40 crowns so I thought, why not? And I am so glad I bought it.
Julie is a very special girl; she spends most of her time in school, even after it’s closed. She’s very good friends with the janitor and he has given her a key of her own so that she can go to school whenever she feels like it. He knows she won’t do anything stupid or damage anything. He trusts her completely. And so does everyone else.
Julie hasn’t got any human friends but she brings her recorder with her wherever she goes. It’s her diary and the only thing she can talk too. At home she has about 400 tapes with her own thoughts, sounds she thought was beautiful and people with nice voices that she’s interviewed. She knows them all by heart, but there is one that she keeps as her favourite. The one with The Boys´ voice. She heard Him talking to a friend in a cellphone, and she waited until He was finished talking. Then she asked Him if she couldn’t ask Him a few questions about the winter for a schools project. He smiled and said, “sure, for such a pretty girl I could do anything”. That was almost 4 months ago but she saw Him in school once in a while. She never said hi to Him because she was so afraid His voice would be different. She wanted to remember it as it sounded when He talked about angels in the snow and hot chocolate under the stars.
This book is very special because there’s no descriptions of her family or no other persons than The Boy, herself, and the few people you get to know about that she’s interviewed. The ones with the most special voices or the most beautiful thoughts. But instead of lots of descriptions there’s a lot of words. She doesn’t only collect sounds and voices, she also collects words. And she puts them together like a puzzle, and then she sits all night and speaks them quiet for herself. The ones she likes the most are recorded on tape. That’s so she’ll never forget them.
The title I think perhaps describes her life. She is mostly found of the night with all its secrets and darkness. She thinks the days are too light to pay attention to, and she prefers to be awake at night. But she doesn’t sleep a lot anyway, in the days she’s in school and as fast as it gets dark she gets out on the streets and just walks around. She is amazed by the power of the stars and the moon, and she loves to see her own shadow dancing around in the light of the streetlights.
There’s really not a lot to say about this book. I think it belongs to a very rare genre but I myself am very found of it. It’s the kind of book you don’t really know how to explain to others because it doesn’t really happen anything. It’s the kind of book that makes you think a lot too, not only read the words and then you forget all about it when you’re finished reading. You keep on thinking about it long after you’ve turned the last page. And that’s a quality I really admire. A writer that can make you think, not just about the book, but...
