The aim of this masters thesis is to examine the information access of female Ph. D. students in connection with their situation as women and researchers within the academic setting. In order to examine this, qualitative interviews with ten female Ph. D. students within the field of Natural Science have been conducted. Our theoretical perspectives consist of two ideas both partly based on the concept formation of Pierre Bourdieu. One perspective consists of Lars Seldéns idea of the information seeking career of researchers, in which new concepts have been constructed on the basis of those of Bourdieu. The other perspective consists of Margareta Damms research on female Ph. D. students, in which she also applies Yvonne Hirdmans idea of the division of the sexes. Regarding our conclusions of the information access of the female Ph.D. students, the information access is generally not regarded as being affected by the situation as women in the academic context. However, in those cases where the access seems to be affected, it is limited in connection with information seeking through interpersonal communication. This is expressed in a situation where women constitute a minority at the department and with the opinion that women are excluded from certain areas.
