Romeo and Juliet - review

I have watched Baz Luhrmann’s film based on Shakespeare’s story about the two teenagers who are in love, but also from rivaling families. I have also read the book, and they are both lovely, but I have to say that I prefer the film. It has a strange feeling about it, as if you have taken the old and the new and mixed them together. The language is very Shakespeare, an old and bombastic English, while the setting is a modern day city. It’s almost as if the population of Shakespeare’s novel have been thrown into the nineties, and not quite adjusted themselves yet.

The actors are great. Claire Danes is the perfect Juliet, and when I read the book, it’s her face I see when I try to imagine how Juliet looks. Leonardo DiCaprio is a great Romeo, and they are just perfect together. Unfortu-nately, their happiness is of the short kind. Romeo kill Juliet’s cousin, and he has to run away. Juliet makes up a plan to be able to be with him, she is going to fake her own death so she can run off and be with him.

Juliet sends Romeo a letter to tell him about her brilliant plan, but the letter is lost along the way. Therefore, Romeo understands nothing as the news reach him. He goes back, just to find the love of his life lying cold and rigid. Little does he know that all she has done is to take a sleepingpotion that set her body in a very deep coma, totally similar to death, except she’s alive...

Mad from the sorrow of loosing his beloved, Romeo places himself next to Juliet and drink a bottle of very powerful poison. The moment the last drop of poison has slid down his throat, Juliet opens her eyes, and understands what he has done. Without the shadow of a doubt Juliet takes Romeo’s gun and shoot herself. End of story. Not quite faithful to Shakespeare’s work, but very beautiful and sad.

To lose love is to lose life, for Shakespeare’s characters, and if you can’t live together, you can always die together. It makes a nice story, but I am personally more impressed by people who can live an en...
