Introduction

The president of America is probably the mightiest man on earth. We have chosen to find facts about some of the American presidents because of the election 2 November. In this paper we are going to present the first president of America, George Washington and John F Kennedy, Bill Clinton and George W Bush.

American Revolution

Conflict between 13 British colonies in North America and their parent country, Great Britain. It was made up of two related events: the American War of Independence (1775-1783) and the formation of the American government as laid out by the Constitution of the United States in 1787. First, the war achieved independence from Great Britain by the colonies. Second, the newly created United States of America established a republican form of government, in which power resided with the people.
The revolution had many causes. Long-term social, economic, and political changes in the colonies before 1750 provided the basis for an independent nation with representative political institutions. More immediately, the French and Indian War (1754-1763) changed the relationship between the colonies and their mother country. Finally, a decade of conflicts between the British government and the colonists, beginning with the Stamp Act crisis in 1765, led to the outbreak of war in 1775 and the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Once independent, the new state governments implemented republican constitutions, and a Continental Congress directed the American war effort. Then in 1781 the rebellious states created a loose union under the Articles of Confederation. At the end of the war in 1783, Britain recognised its former colonies as an independent nation. In 1789 the people of the several states ratified the Constitution that created a stronger central government and George Washington became the first president.

George Washington

George Washington was born on his father’s land in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on February 22, 1732. He was the eldest son, and he had a half brother also, called Lawrence.

The family climb to modest wealth in three generations, and that was the result of hard work, like a farmer ,and they did buy a lot of land, and some local industries. There they did make a lot of money in future.

But his father died in 1743, and that was a big sorrow to George.
George grew up like a tall, strong young man, who didn’t go much outside, but liked music and theatrical performances, and was a bit awkward with girls but loved dancing.

And when he was 17 he was appointed like an inspector of Culpeper County, Virginia, the first public office he held.

When his half-brother, Lawrence died in 1752, George soon got the beautiful land of Mount Vernon, in Fairfax County, one of six farms, then held by the Washington family interests.

On June 15, 1775, the Continental Congress elected George Washington as general and commander in chief of its army. He was chosen for two basic reasons. First, he was respected for his military abilities, his selflessness, and his strong commitment to colonial freedom. Secondly, Washington was a Virginian, and it was hoped that his appointment would bind the Southern colonies more closely to the rebellion in New England.
Congressman John Adams of Massachusetts was the moving force in securing the command for Washington. He realised that, although the war had begun in Massachusetts, success could come only if all
13 colonies were united in their protest and in their willingness to fight.

Under the terms of the Constitution, the formal election for president was done by electors, who were collectively called the Electoral College. Each elector was to vote for the two persons he considered most qualified; the winner would be the president, and the runner-up would be the vice president. The electors themselves were chosen January 7, 1789, by the direct vote of the people in some states, and by the government in other states. The electors met in each state on February 4 and voted for George Washington, who thereby became president. Their second choice, was John Adams of Massachusetts.
But on September 1796, George was determined that would not go on a third period. He had guided his country for eight long years, and protected it from enemies and so on. It was time for change. Washington explained the reasons for his decision not to run again.
John Adams continued his work, and often he did quoted George Washington.

George Washington died December 14, 1799, that was a great sorrow for the American people, because he was a great president.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
(Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country)

He was born 1917-63. He was the 35th president of the United States (1961-63). Kennedy was born in Brookline Massachusetts. The second of nine children, the family was wealthy and long been active in politics. He graduated from Harvard University in 1940, 1946 he joined the Democratic party and successfully ran for the US House of Representatives. He married Jacqueline Bouvier; and they were the parents of two children.
The youngest person ever to be elected president and also the first Roman Catholic president.

Kennedy was assassinated before he completed his third year as president.
His influence was world-wide, and his handling of the Cuban missile crisis may have prevented war. Young people admired him, and no other president was so popular. He brought to the presidency an awareness of the cultural and historical traditions of the United States.

1941-1945 he served in the US Navy in the World War 2.1961-1963 he was the President of the United States. Kennedy won the Pulitzer Prize in 1957 for his book Profiles in Courage and was decorated for heroism in World War 2 for saving three men after his vessel was sunk by a Japanese destroyer.

In the fall of 1963 Kennedy began to plan his strategy for reelection. He flew across the country extolling the improvements in US-Soviet relations, receiving generally favourable public responses. On November 22, at 12:30 PM, while riding in an open limousine through Dallas, Texas, Kennedy was shot in the head and neck by a sniper. He was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where efforts to revive him failed

The state funeral of President Kennedy was watched on television by millions around the world. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton’s real name was William Jefferson Blythe IV. But when he lost his dad when he was very young, he changed his name after his stepfather Roger Clinton of Hot Springs, Arkansas, married his mother.
When Bill Clinton was president, that was the lowest inflation they had in 30 years, the crime was reducing in many places, and better welfare than before for almost everyone.

But all good has an ending, and his second year was huge failure, because the health cares reform. He started to focus on the education, and restrict handgun sales and also to improve and secure the environment and so on, later.

Bill Clinton used to play saxophone and considered to be a professional musician. As a student he was always very good in the school. He was a delegate to Boys of Nation, and in High school he met the president, John F. Kennedy in the White House.
That was a big motivation to continue with politic.

Clinton went in Georgetown University but won 1968 a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University, and then later he started to study politics.

1975, a big day for Bill Clinton, he married Hillary Rodham, and another big day was 1980, when they got there only child, Chelsea.

Later when he was deep in politics, he defeated George Bush, and Ross Perot, in -92.
But 1998, was a year he will not forget, some say that he had a affair with Monica Lewinsky, and being the second president in the US to have been accused for that. The Senate didn’t found him guilty for the charges. The president apologised, and continued to have bad reputation, after all…

The world saw him like a peacemaker, and he successfully stopped the ethnic cleaning from former Yugoslavia. When the Serbs was killing millions Muslims, and he also bombed Saddam Hussein, when he stopped the UN inspectors. Many people loved him and adored him…
But in year 2000 George W. Bush was elected and, the world doesn’t like him that much like president Clinton…

George W Bush

Bush was born on July 6, 1946, in New Haven, Connecticut as the first child of George Herbert Walker Bush and Barbara Pierce Bush. For business reasons they moved to several places in Texas. In 1950 the family moved and settled down in Midland, were Bush grew up. At Yale University he received a bachelor’s degree in 1968 and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1975. Before he became the president he was the Governor of Texas.

His grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a Wall Street financier who was elected to the Senate of the United States from Connecticut in 1952. Although George Herbert Walker Bush, his father, began his career in the oil industry, he eventually served as a congressman, head of the Republican National Committee, ambassador to the United Nations, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and vice president. Like this wasn’t enough, he became president of the United States.

George W Bush is the 43rd president of the United States, and has been that since the 20 January 2001. He took office after one of the closest and most disputed elections in US history and launched a war against terrorism after a devastating terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Bush was reelected in 2004, defeating Democratic opponent John F. Kerry by winning the South and the key battleground state of Ohio.

When he took office he became the first son to follow his father into the White House since John Quincy Adams followed John Adams in the early 19th century. Bush was also the first presidential candidate since Benjamin Harrison in 1888 to win the electoral vote, and thus the presidency, while losing the nation-wide popular vote. Bush lost the popular vote to Democratic candidate Al Gore by more than 500,000 votes out of more than 105 million cast nation-wide. However, he secured a 271 to 266 victory in the electoral college when, after five weeks of legal wrangling, Gore failed to overturn election results that gave the state of Florida, with 25 electoral votes, to Bush.

As president, Bush faced the challenges of global terrorism. After the September 11 attacks, he declared a war against terrorism, pledging to defeat those who threatened the security of the United States. Bush led a coalition of countries into Afghanistan to destroy and remove the Taliban regime, which had harboured al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda is the internation...
