Little about the book

The police got a phone call from a woman that said she heard gunshots fire of. A few minuets later the two detectives Arthur brown and Steve Carella arrived at the scene and found two men murdered. At first they thought it was a double homicide, but it turned out to be much more. In one of the men’s palm there were a piece of a photograph. This piece is part of a puzzle that shows where money from a robbery committed seven years ago is located. The piece turns out to be one of eight pieces held by different people. There is also a list of names that have been torn into two pieces. An investigator called Irving Krutch took contact with the cops because he had one half of the list of names. On the list the two murdered men’s names was written on it.

Arthur Brown and Steve Carella try to solve the mystery. They took contact with the listed people but some of them didn´t want to give up any information and made the job harder. One by one the peoples names on the list turn up dead. There was somebody needing that money desperately and the cops attend to find out who. Much happens and people get killed and assaulted but finally the police gather up 7 pieces. But one is missing. And the cops have no idea who’s got it. But their suspicions are headed towards Irving Krutch because they are running out of suspects. And finally irving confesses. He wanted the money and attended to get it no matter what. The cops arrested Irving and dug up the money that was hidden under the sea.

The book reached up to my expectations in many ways. First of all it was very interesting as I thought it would be and second of all it was very confusing, I sometimes lost track of what was happening because so much happened at the same time. I sometimes had to read the last two pages of the chapter just to refresh my mind on what I have read the night before.

The book was much better than I thought it would be, I though it would be much duller than it was, it was actually very funny. And the fact that Ed Mcbain is a good author is no joke, the rumours were true, he did an excellent job on writing this book. The book was not only funny, interesting but also educational. I learnt a lot of new police terms and sayings.

Ed did and great job on the characters personalities. There was the big and tough one, the Italian, the funny looking and the one that always made fun of the others.

I specially liked Arthur Brown. He was the main character that played a detective. Arthur brown was a good detective. He had a good partner Steve Carella, they were determined to crack the case and they did because they pulled smart moves. What I liked about these two where that they weren’t afraid of anything and always got each other’s back.
Arthur was a big black fellow that looked a little scary. I would love to meet him because he had a strong personality that nothing or nobody could weaken. And Ed described him in a way that made me picture a famous person, The rock. When Arthur’s name was mentioned I though of the rock and I like the rock and that’s probably why I liked Arthur as much as I did.

In the book there were racist comments said to Arthur but he wasn’t offended or hurt in any way. When he was on duty he put on an act that presented him as a tough and scary guy that didn’t take crap from nobody. And when he was at home he was a loving husband and father. He was kind and gentile and made his family laugh all the time. He loved his daughter and wife, they meant the world to him and he made sure they knew it.

The ending was great. I had no idea that Irving was the bad guy, I just though he would get promoted if he helped crack the case. Irving seemed a little to stupid to get away with it and he was, but he was very close on getting a hold on the money. I would like to know what happened with Irving Kruth and his girlfriend that...
