Book review – the Eye of the World

I’ve read a book called “the Eye of the World” and it’s written by a famous fantasy writer whose name is Robert Jordan. This is but the first one in an unfinished serie of books, with so far ten books. The serie itself is called “The Wheel of Time” and is the absolutely best fantasy serie I’ve ever read.
When Rand al’Thor one day notices a dark rider in the forest, he immediately tells his father about it. But when he doesn’t see anything, Rand dismiss it as just his imagination. When their small little village gets attacked by monsters taken from a gleeman’s tale he realizes that it’s much more than just his imagination…
There are several main characters in this book and if I were to describe them all, it would take several pages. So I’ve chosen the most important characters in the story; Rand al’Thor, Matrim Cauthon and Perrin Aybara.
Rand al’Thor; Rand is a young man, not older than 18 years old. He is very tall, in difference to most of the farmers in the “Two Rivers”, he’s got red hair and blue eyes. I get the impression that Rand is a talented young man, eager to learn new things. He’s not afraid of taking out on an adventure now and then.
Matrim Cauthon (Also known as Mat); Mat is just as young as Rand but a lot shorter. He’s a slim boy close to laughter and he likes playing tricks and often he gets both Rand and Perrin in to them. He’s got brown hair and dark eyes. I get the impression that unlike Rand he’s got a hard time of learning and want to play around more than to do anything serious.
Perrin Aybara; Just as Rand and Mat, Perrin’s a young man. But he’s a bit different in comparison to Rand and Mat. Perrin is a tall blacksmiths apprentice with arms as thick as the leg of a man. He’s got brown curly hair. Perrin can appear slow, but he just want to make sure that he does everything correctly. Perrin is the kind of guy that doesn’t want to take any risks.
The environment in the book is described extremely well; when I read it I can almost feel the wind against my face. An example: “Green leaves covered peacefully spreading branches. Wildflowers made a carpet of bright patches in grasses stirred by a sweet spring breeze. Butterflies fluttered from blossom to blossom, with buzzing bees, and birds trilled their songs”. As you can see, the environment is described so carefully. That can be a negative thing too, because if you aren’t in the mood of reading long environmental descriptions and want to get on with the story, it can be quite irritating.
As this is just one out of ten books there isn’t exactly a message in it. And if I were to write an analysis over the message of the serie, I would destroy all of the reading. So I’ll leave this part for the ones patient enough to read the whole serie.
The language in the book is very advanced and if you have problems reading other books in English, this isn’t a good book to start with. But since I like a bit of a challenge, I think it’s good that the language is a bit hard.
I’m very impressed of Robert Jordan that he can keep a book interesting like this one and STILL write nine more books, just as interesting. In fact, it gets more fascinating and exciting the farther you...
