The horsewhisperer is Nicholas Evans first novel and it was the number one international bestseller when it was published in 1995. It’s a page-turning novel filled with drama in many forms.

It’s a beautiful winter morning with new fallen snow glittering from the rising sun. Two young girls are going out for a ride which seems to be their most beautiful ride ever. They are laughing and joking, playing with the horses. The path they are following is a path they’ve ridden many times before, and they know it well. On a hillside Judith’s horse Gulliver trembles and slides down towards Gracie and Pilgrim, Judith shouting at them to get out of the way. On the road behind them a truck is coming their way, moving way too fast. Both girls and their horses are standing in the way of the truck, unable to move. In a few seconds everything changes, two lifes are taken, two lifes are spared. Grace survives with but an amputated leg and a few weeks in coma. Pilgrim is trashed, seriously wounded both physically and bodily, but Gracie’s mom refuses to let the vets put him down. She wants to show Gracie how much she love her, and does everything in her power to make the horse healthy again.

I believe the main-topic of this novel is love, fighting for what you believe in and never give up. Gracie’s mom, Annie, does everything in her power to make Pilgrim healthy again. It is a long way to go, but she never gives up. The reason – to help Gracie recover as well. But Gracie is refusing to do anything to help – she believes the horse would be better off put down – until Annie gets a horsewhisperer to help them. He too is very doubtful, but soon realizes Annie is a woman who won’t take no for an answer – she drove half-a-continent with Pilgrim in a trailer he never left til they got to their destination. Tom, the whisperer, starts to work with Pilgrim because he sees not only Pilgrim is trashed, but also Annie and Gracie. He thinks that if he can Pilgrim to recover, he would also help the girl and her mother.

The novel is well written, though with quite many difficult words. It gets even harder if you’re not interested in horses, and may not know many expressions in the “horse-world” or what the equipment used around the horses is for. Evans is using a good, describing, language which paints a picture of what is happening before you.

I really liked the book, but it took a while to get into it. Part one is quite tough, the only happening is the accident. Then it’s only about Grace lying in her coma, the bodily recover of Pilgrim and Annie trying to find someone to help her with Pilgrim. But when part two is started I could hardly put the book away once I started to read, I just wanted to know what happened next.

I would recommend this book to someone who has a fairly big vocabulary or to someone who is prepared to look up some words in the dictionary while reading. It’s tough sometimes with many hard words, but it’s a really good book.
