This book is about six men, Gary Schofield (Gaz), Dave Horsfall, Gerald Arthur Cooper, Barrington Mitchell (Horse), Lomper and Guy living in a little town called Sheffield.
It all starts with Gaz that’s near to lose his twelve-year-old son, Nathan, because he doesn’t have the enough money, seven hundred pounds, to give his wife, Mandy, and her new stiff boyfriend Barry. Gaz is a member of a thing called the Job Club. It’s a local club for people that are unemployed and all they do there is sitting, playing cards and waiting for some job just to come running to them. They know very well that the Job Club isn’t helping at all, but they had no place else to go. Gaz’s best friend, Dave, has problems with his wife, Jean, he thinks that she is having an affair with her work college Frankie.
One cold Sunday afternoon in April, Gaz, Dave and Nathan are trying to steal a steel girder to make some money. That doesn’t go well and once again they go away with empty hands.
Then one day there is a big queue of women outside the Millthorpe Working Men’s Club. It appears that it’s the Chippendales, a male strippers group, that’s in town. Dave tells Gaz that Jean is in there with her two friends Sharon and Bee. Gaz decides to get Jean out of there and forces Nathan to do get her. They jump in through a window and is now in the men’s room. As Nathan goes out in the crowded room Jean and her two friends come in to the men’s room and Gaz hides in a toilet booth. Sharon and Bee starts to make jokes about Frankie and Jean tells them how much she loves Dave and that she is worried about him. Gaz don’t tell Dave that, and when Nathan is back without Jean they all three go home.
The next day Gaz tells Dave about an idea he has to make some money, to strip like the Chippendales. Dave refuses big time! Then Gaz says “Well, if you don’t want to help me I can always go back to stealing cars.” The last time Gaz had done that he had ended up in jail. “Okay, you win, I’ll help you”. Gaz is running before Dave and Dave stops to help a man to get his car running, and when he had done that he saw that it was the security guard, Lomper, from the steel factory before it had closed that sat in the front seat looking pale and nervous. Dave starts talking to him, but Lomper just sits quiet and Dave doesn’t notice the strange smell that starts to fill the car. After a while Dave gives up and runs to Gaz, but then he realizes what Lomper was up to and runs back and pulls him out of the car. Then Gaz, Dave and Lomper sits for an hour discussing the best way for Lomper to kill him self. The conversation has its end and some time after that Gaz is dancing to a song in the steel factory to show his idea, Nathan is there to and he is very embarrassed.
Now they were three men that were going to be strippers. Now they needed a dance teacher. They choose their old boss, Gerald Cooper, and after screwing up an interview for a job he agrees. Then they have a audition for some other guys that might be able to join them. First there was Horse, he could dance really good, and the there was Guy who had a really manly body. The six men watches films and trained really hard to make the group better than the Chippendales. Gerald finds it very hard to teach the men to dance, but then Horse translates everything Gerald says to football language and the men understood perfectly.
Then, after a while, Gaz goes to his friend Alan to try to hire a place to do their show in. But to hire it the men must pay a hundred pounds first. Gaz tries to borrow money from Mandy, without success, so Nathan takes out over a hundred pounds from his account. Gaz hires the place and prints up posters and the six men puts them up all around town. Then two women sees them, asking what it is and Gaz says that they are better than the Chippendales and then he gets panic and says that the five men are going the full Monty! Dave refuses and gets out of the group, that now has a name; Hot Metal, and they are performing in security guards uniforms.
The other men don’t give up and keep on practicing. Then one evening when the five men are dancing in the empty steel factory with Gerald and Nathan looking a police man, PC Henry, walks by and sees them and takes Gaz, Horse and Gerald down to the station. There they check out the security cameras and surprisingly the policeman starts to talk about how they dance, etc. Then Mandy comes in and takes Nathan, which is talking to the social service, and forbids Gaz to see him again.
When Gerald comes home later that evening a van is parked outside his house and two men where carrying furniture and other things into it – he just couldn’t pay his bills. He walks up to Linda and she founds out that he have been unemployed for about six months. He decides to go to Gaz because Linda told him to never come back.
Gaz is in his own mind wondering about how to win back Nathan when Gerald comes and it’s then Gaz really decides to get Nathan back what ever happens!
The next day Gerald and Gaz went to see Nathan after school but Barry and Mandy where there and just takes Nathan from him. Now Gaz is out of him mind – he has to get Nathan back! He goes to Asda where Dave works. He tells Dave that Lompers mom is dead (which is true) and Gaz wants Dave to get him a black jacket for the funeral and then put it back to its place. Dave does it and he and Gaz becomes friends again.
The local newspaper the Sheffield Star has heard about the arrest and now it is all over the paper. The men are suddenly getting a lot of attention. The members of the factory band even played a little friendly joke on Lomper by playing The Stripper instead of the original songs. Anyway, the group isn’t going to do the performance so Gaz is going to Alan to ask for his hundred pounds back ‘caus...
