SCA Packaging, as a provider of transport packaging, wants further knowledge of the logistics processes a corrugated board box undergoes. This thesis describes the development, the theory and the trial of a method for modelling logistic processes.
The method is based on a break down of the packaging process, and analysis of the resulting components. The packaging process in its entirety is the main process, which consists of sub processes (Box producer, Distribution centre, Waste handler, etc.) that, in turn, consist of activities (Packing line, Warehouse etc.). The activities are further divided into tasks (Forklift transport, Filling of box, etc.)
At task level, the method includes measuring a number of attributes of the process. Measuring in away that enable comparison of measures from different parts of the process, as well as from different processes. The method includes definitions and descriptions of these attributes, as well as measuring instructions to achieve appropriate measures, An analyst must fully understand the principles and the aims of the modelling method to be able to comprehend and adjust the measuring to the different situations in a process. The attributes used in the modelling method are; Time, Labour, Waste, Damages, Capital Charges, Issues and Other costs.
An initial, theoretically composed, method was trailed and further developed through modelling a limited part of a supply chain, the packaging process of SCA Mölnlycke?s plant in Falkenberg. During this case-study, a lot was learned about modelling and measuring problems. A pilot model of the Falkenberg process, was eventually completed.
Due to the three-step-division of the main process, a user of the ready model can chose which level of magnification to study. For instance, the time spent in each sub process can first be reviewed, the user can then drill down to desired level and find out in which activities and ultimately in which tasks, the time is spent. The same thing can be done with ?Waste?, ?Labour? etc.
