The increasing competition on today's markets, has made companies realise the importance of their employees behaviour and their important influence on the effectiveness of the business. Companies need to coordinate their resources and act towards determined goals to be able to keep their customers in a competitive market. A means of control that can be used to create agreement between a company's goal and how the employees act is a reward system. The purpose of the reward system is foremost to motivate the employees to perform their assignments efficiently, but also to keep key- persons within the company. Creating an effective reward system can be considered a complicated and time-consuming task by management, since many factors have to be considered. The purpose of this thesis is to identify factors that could affect the design of a reward system, and how these factors can differ depending on whether the reward system has a financial or non-financial character. For the purpose of this paper, a case study was conducted within two companies - one with a financial and one with a non-financial reward system.
