Title: Evening Class
Author: Maeve Binchy

Short biography of author:
Maeve Binchy was born 1940 and grew up in County Dublin in Ireland. Before she became a writer she was a teacher and has also worked at the Irish Times. Her breakthrough came after her first full-lenght book, Light a Penny Candle in 1982. The success led to her becoming one of Ireland’s best-known writers.

Structure:
There are eight chapters. Chapter one to seven are about seven very different persons whos only common interest is to learn Italian. Chapter eight is about a trip to Rome, the goal of an Italian evening class.
The writer describes her characters in a very smart way. She gives a presentation that’s short but long enough to tell the most important about every person and then unites them one by one to the core of the book, the evening class. The chapters are called: Aidan, Signora, Bill, Lou, Connie, Laddy, Fiona and Viaggio*.

Place: The evening classes are held at Mountainwiew school, Mountainwiew, Ireland.

Story:
To start an Italian evening class was from the beginning just a dream for Italy-lover Aiden Dunne, teacher at Mountainwiew school. He got to start the class after loosing the principal job, it was definitely a consolation prize. When Signora (Nora O’Donaghue) returns home to Ireland after 26 years in Sicily, she needs a job and hears about the evening class through an acquaintance. They organize the evening class and very soon about thirty people has joined the class. Seven of them are as different as their reasons for joining the class. There’s more in it for some than just learning Italian. These seven are presented in more detailes. The leaders and the pupils of the calss started out as straingers but become friends and the class end up changing their lives for ever.
