Helen Fielding has written the book I have read. It is on 422 pages and it is a comedy.
Bridget Jones has finally got a boyfriend, Mark Darcy, but everything isn''''t fine. Bridget worries about that Mark think about her as a "just for now girl", and why does he spend so much time with Rebecca? With help from her friends Bridget tries to solve her problems.
Bridget Jones is a woman that has some problems with herself. She thinks that she is fat and counts every calorie and writes it down in her diary. "Calories 2,100, calories used up by shags 600, so total calories 1,500 (exemplary)." (p. 3)
Bridget is good at embarrassing herself, like when she calls Mark when he is at his work on a meeting. The phone call goes like this: "Mark: Yes? Darcy here. Me: It''''s Bridget. Mark: (pause) Right. Er. Everything OK? Me: Yes. It was nice last night, wasn''''t it I mean - you know, when we... Mark: I do know, yes. Exquisite. (pause) I''''m actually with the Indonesian Ambassador, the Head of Amnesty International and the Under-Secretary of State for Trade and Industry at the moment." (p. 14).
The persons in my book live in Notting Hill. Some times you get to know where she is, for example "8.45 a.m. In Coins Café having cappuccino, chocolate croissant, and cigarette" (p.4) or "7 p.m. Back in flat" (p. 14). The book doesn’t say anything about how it looks in the places she is in. That is because you don’t write how everything looks like in a diary, you may write feelings and were things happens but not how it looks like.
The book was first published in 1999 so I guess it take place that year. It is clear to me that it is nowadays because all the slang. So probably you can say it take places some time between 1999 and today.
I think the book is funny and that is probably why Helen has written it. Its purpose is to be funny, to make people laugh at Bridget which is the protagonist. I think that she, who has written the book want people to understand that if you are near 30-40, your life doesn’t end. You can still have fun and find a person you love and you should try to laugh when you embarrass yourself instead of being ashamed, it is not the end of the world.
We get to know everything from Bridget’s perspective, which is really funny. She is very good at misunderstandings and when she once has gotten something wrong it is hard for her to set everything right again.
I think the book is good, but it is some times hard to understand what the narrator mean. That is because the book is written like a diary and it is a lot of slang and shortenings. It is hard to me to understand them because I''''m not so familiar with British slang. But when I once figured out what they mean...
