Book Report
I have read the 150 pages long. Paris, Pee Wee and Big Dog, a book written by Rosa Guy in 1984. I had never heard of Rosa Guy until I read this book I don't think she is that famous, but that didn't matter at all. I think it is important to have the courage as a reader to investigate new areas, and not just stick to the most famous writers. My first impression of the book was not that good, I thought it was just another children book that didn't had anything new to come whit. But I was wrong. The book tells how an ordinary day looks like for the kids in the ghetto and even tough it's a children book it is pretty rough. The book didn't turn out the way I thought it would, I thought it would be completely harmless but instead there were some action.
The persons in the book are described well. And it was very easy to create a picture of the environment, mostly because of the description, but also because there were some illustrated pictures. It is hard to connect on a deeper level whit the main characters because it is such a short book. The main characters are Paris, Pee Wee and Big Dog. Who are three boys living in the ghetto just outside New York City. The book take places in a ghetto outside New York City, were the main character Paris lives a pretty good life based on the economic situation.
Paris wakes up an ordinary day, he says good morning to his mother, and promise to clean up at home while she is at work, but only a moment after his mother has gone out, Paris best friend Pee Wee come and ask if they should go out and roller-skate, and Paris can't resist. They have found the perfect place to roller-skate, Dead Mans Hill. The steepest and longest street in the entire ghetto, and that's were they are going. On the way there they meet up whit Paris 8 year old cousin Big Dog and he boast about his new roller-skates. At first they don't want Big Dog to come along, but after a little persuasion from Big Dogs side he follows. The Dead Mans Hill is steeper than they remembered, so they get a little scared at first. And while the boys are playing there, the morning traffic is at its climax and the whole spectacle ends whit a polis chase. They run from the cops and when they think they are out of trouble they bump into Marvin and his gang. The whole story takes place under just one day and at the end of the day the boys learn that you should listen to your parents and trust your friends.
I thought the language in the book was easy to understand, but you can easily tell that it takes place in the ghetto, because there are many slang words and there is much idiom in the dialogs. The book is written in interactive form so it is enjoyable to read.
I liked the book, it was easy to read ...
