Remember the Titans

Remember the titans is a 2000 american biographical sports film which has won several prizes and it is considered to be one of the best sports film in the history. The movie takes place in Alexandria, Virginia in early 1970s.

Remember the Titans shows the truth about integration and segregation during the early 1970s, how standing up for each other could change the view of black people and also how hate can turn into love.

What major differences are there between the 70s and present time?

Between the 70s and our present time has it happened a lot of changes, some of the biggest changes where about womens, girls, the black and whites and schools.

The schools in the 70s was very divided, black and white students wasn't able to study together, it wasn't seen as normal as today. Black teachers wasn't able to work with white teachers  or teach white students. Coach boone got the chance to work at a school that had only white students in the beginning, he only got the chance to work in the school because they wanted to show that they weren't racist. Today in Sweden, we don't have problems with having black and white teachers working together, the colour of the skin isn't as important as it was before. Then again there are other countries that still have big problems having people of color working close to theme.

Womens have changed a lot, in the early 70s women weren't as independent as they are today. Today can women work as whatever they want, they can dress however they want, be with whoever they want. In the early 70s, women weren't treated equally as men, they couldn't play the sports they wanted and if a little girl was seen playing football or liking football she got called tomboy. In remember the titans we can see the little girl Sheryl who liked  football, she didn't have any friends and other girls called her tomboy. Today little girls like Sheeryl don't have to think about what colour they wear and they can play whatever sport without being called tomboy.

Is there a character that goes through a lot of changing? Who and why? (Gerry)

The character that goes through the most change is Gerry Bertier. Gerry was born in August 20, 1953. His parents got divorced when he was eight years old and he was then raised by his mother. Gerry was described as a goal oriented and friendly young man. His biggest goal in life was to win a gold medal in the olympics.

Gerry was the captain of the team, Gerry was a respectful teenager, he loved to play football and he loved his teammates but he didn't like having black players in his team and neither having Herman Boone as the new head coach.

When the Titans goes to the camp to practice, they have two buses, one gets filled with the white players and the other with black players. Coach Boone sees this and puts each white player with a black player together as roommates and they get obligated to sit together in the bus and to  get to know each other under the days in camp. Gerry get put together with Julius, at first they have problems being together.

Gerry changes at the camp, one night they are training, he ends screaming at a white

player because the white player didn’t help one of the black player. Julius sees this and tackles on of his own player and it's when the team becomes, ‘’strong side, left side’’. After the camp all the players go back to the same school. Gerry sees his girlfriend Emma, and he tries to make Julius and Emma shake hands but Emma doesn’t give the hand or talk to him at all. After a few more incidents Gerry decides to break up with Emma because she didn't like him being with the black students. When the players starts training in school, Gerry sees that his best friend wasn't defending the black players in field so he goes and tell his best friends and throws him out from the team. Later some of Gerrys white friends tells him  ‘’ you have friends at the zoo’’ , Gerry doesnt care and  ends becoming bestfriends with Julius.  Gerry even brings Julius home and let's him meet his mother, at the beginning it was awkward for his mother but then they both accept the new relationship with Julius.

When Gerry was having the best time in his life he had a car accident, he got paralysed and wasn't able to walk again. Instead of getting depressed he used his injury and practice in paralympics. He got such a good relationship with Julius that he even called Julius brother infront if the nurse "Are you blind? Can’t you see the resemblance? It is my brother out there.".

I think this movie is worth watching and the story is super important. Despite how many problems they had in the beginning the team were able to eliminate the racial division they had in the team and also in Alexandria. The Titans show how you can become a winning team by getting together.

Quotes:

  1. Who is your daddy Gerry? Boone says this to Bertier, why is Bertier so offended when he is hearing this?

Gerry gets offended hearing this because his parents separated when he was at a young age and he didn't see his father after the separation

  1. This is no democracy. It is a dictatorship. I am the law. (Boone). What does Boone mean by this?

  • That he was going to be the one that decide what they will do and not the players.

  1. Attitude reflect leadership captain. What does this mean? (Julius says this to Gerry)

  • Julius meant that he couldn't blame the team for how they acted and that he should blame himself since his attitude reflect leadership captain and the team will do/learn as the leader.

  1.  People say it can’t work, black and white. But before we reach for hate always, always we remember the Titans. What are they trying to show by this? (Sheryl)

I think sheryl is trying to show nu this that it doesn't matter how much hate it is you can always win and you should remember how the titans won over the hate.

  1. You make sure they remember FOREVER the night they played the Titans. Why is Yoast saying this when he is peeping the team for the very last game?

  • Yoast is saying this so the player play as best as they can, that even if they lose or win they will remember the last game.

  1. Left side! Strong side! This is something Bertier and Campbell say to each other several times through the movie, why?

  • To remember that they needed to work together to win.
