A musical memory

It is incredible to stand in the spotlight. You do not see one single person, except foggy faces of those that are sitting in the front road. But everyone sees you, every detail of your body. Before the festival in the box behind the stage I was so nervous that my entire body shook as a leaf, but all the nervous feelings disappeared when I finally stood there looking out searching for faces in the black audience. Because I could not see anyone so I had nothing to be nervous or afraid of anymore.

Every year in my old school in springtime teachers arranged a school festival where voluntary students could perform a musical number or a dance number in a competition for first, second and third prize. Later in the year they sell this festival in the school cafeteria on a DVD. This festival is called Hemmesta festival, the reason why they call it Hemmesta is because it is the name of my school. This is a very appreciated festival for both the kids at school and their parents. There are two festivals, one for teachers and students and another for parents and relatives.

This was the last year before upper secondary school so me and my girlfriends decided to participate at the festival with a dance act. We discussed it with our music teachers, Julle and Jakob, and decided what song we should dance to. We decided to make a street dance act to Cristina Aguilera’s song Dirty. Our teacher thought it was a great idea. We rehearsed for five or six weeks, before the big performance.

After many hours of rehearsal and styling the day of the festival finally came. Before it was our turn to perform I helped a couple of singers with their microphones and afterwards I took a chance to have a look at the audience through the stage curtains, it was crowded! That made me even more nervous than I already was.
There were thirteen musical numbers in all, and we were the only dance number so the competition was hard. We also had a house band which included two guitarists, a drummer, a pianist and two electric guitarists. The band played together with most of the singers.
When the musical number before us finished I had my thoughts to get out of there. I was very nervous! Suddenly the curtain went up and the music started to play.
To never have danced this type of dance before it went fairly well. It should have felt really bad to throw 6 weeks of hard training in the sea; those were my thoughts before the show when I went extremely nervous. The band accompanied much of the performing artists.
