Will is a 38-year-old bachelor who lives on the money from his fathers one hit wonder. He likes to watch tv, to shop and to meet women. When he by mere accident meets the single mom Angie, his view of women and how he’s going to get them changes. He makes up a two-year-old son to be able to go to a meeting for single parents. On a picnic, arranged by the meeting, Will meets twelve-year-old Marcus. Will drives Marcus home, and by some reason he follows Marcus into the flat. Inside lies Marcus’ mom, Fiona, unconscious after trying to commit suicide.
From this moment, Will gets unwillingly involved into Marcus and his situation. Marcus, who is being ganged up on in school and has a depressed mom, often comes home to Will after school. At first Will thinks it’s irritating that Macus is coming, but after a while he stops to care. One day Will finds out that Marcus is taking damage in school and desides to do anything he can to help Marcus to find his way in school, to help his mother and to find love.

The book takes place in the year 1993 in the city of London. You move around mostly in three places, Will’s upper class flat, Marcus’ detestable school, and in Marcus’ mom’s more working class flat. In the beginning of the book Will is mush upper class, but the more he gets involved into Marcus he lower his ordinary standards.

I thought there were not only one message in the book, but the one I think the writer is trying to put out is that if you just want to you can change your own and others situations.
