The story


This story takes place in South Africa and Botswana. Makhaya is a black man
who lives in South Africa. He’s tired of his life there, because a black man in South Africa is called a “black dog”. He wants to be able to live a normal life without being harassed for the colour of his skin.

He escapes to Botswana, where he meets a man called Dinegro. He thinks Makhaya is a handsome man and askes him to be “his son”. Makhaya agrees and they get back to his native village called Golema Mmdi. The people in that village are pretty poor and uneducated. But a few years ago an Englishman had arrived. His name was Gilbert and he had changed the village for ever. He invented a new way to grow crops.

Pauline is a young woman in the village, she’s smart and the other women listen to her. She thinks Makhaya is a really handsome and interesting man, just like everyone else. Makhaya is a popular and respected person now. Pauline starts to get feelings for Makhaya, but does he feel the same way? If you read the story, you will find out! You’ll also find out what happens when the rain doesn’t come like it’s supposed to do.


My own thoughts

I think it was a really good book. It was pretty simple to read and I understood almost all of the words in it. And the story was really interesting and well written. I really liked it. I couldn’t stop reading. I think the author did a great job with the book. She had caught the feeling that is needed in a book like this one and that’s really important. It’s also full of interesting characters. My favourites are the shy and intelligent Pauline and the brave Makhaya. I like Makhaya because he’s a brave and fair man who helps anyone in need and doesn’t judge people by their looks.
