About Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Franklin D. Roosevelt was born in 1882 at Hyde Park, New York. He was brought up in an aristocratic upper class family where he received a great education at Harvard. It was during his college days at Harvard he fell in love with Anna Eleanor Roosevelt and they were married in 1905.
Though a family of Republicans, Roosevelt entered the politics in 1910 as a Democrat. He was soon elected to the New York Senate.

In the summer of 1921 Roosevelt got polio and could no longer use his legs. Although this tragedy he kept on working and became Governor of New York in 1928. During the great Depression he was, in November 1932, elected President. But the Depression had to be stopped and during Roosevelt’s first 100 days, he introduced what was to be called “The New Deal”. It was a program to bring recovery to business and relief to the unemployed. It was this program that helped America get back on its feet.

In 1936 Franklin Roosevelt was re- elected. When the Second World War started in 1939, USA wanted to stay out of the war. But when France fell, Roosevelt decided to send Great Britain all possible aid. Franklin Roosevelt became the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in 1941. After Japan’s attack in 1942, The Congress gave Roosevelt full authority to rule the military and also the economics in order to produce weapons among other things.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt totally remained President of the United States of America for four terms and that is more than anyone after him ever has.
Roosevelt died of a stroke on April 12th 1945 and never got to see the end of World War 2.

Franklin Roosevelt made one of the world’s most famous speeches on December 8th 1942. This speech has lived in infamy since then and is called “Asks congress to recognize state of war with Japan.”
The U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt asked the congress for an official declaration of war against Japan. Japan had launched a surprise attack against Pearl Harbor, an U.S. naval base in the Hawaiian Islands on December the 7th 1941. During this attack 2 400 Americans were killed and 1200 wounded.

In this speech Roosevelt tells the people of USA about Japan’s attack and that by this time the United States were at peace with Japan. But since the people and territory of USA has been severely threatened he asks the congress to declare war against the Japanese Empire.
