Tim Robbins plays the leading part as Andy Dufresne in the movie “The Shawshank redemption”.
In 1947 Andy Dufresne is brought to the Shawshank prison in handcuffs. He is wrongfully condemned to two lifetimes imprisonment for murder of his wife and her lover.
Old prisoners make bets when new prisoners arrive. Someone always brakes down the first night, but the question is who is it going to be?
Ellis Redding had bet on Andy Dufresne. He lost ten cigarettes that night because Andy didn’t make a sound.
He didn’t say much to anyone during the first weeks, but when he did, it was Ellis Redding he spoke to. He asked “Red” if he could get him a rock hammer, because Red was the one who was known as a “fixer”. He had a great interest in rocks, and he assured Red he was not going to use it as a weapon. He said that he did not have any enemies.
This movie is much about fascism, so called discipline, abuse of power, injustice, but also about hope and friendship.

Red told Andy to watch out for “the sisters”, because they had started to like him. Red explained to Andy: “They aren’t gay. For that you have to be human first, and they don’t qualify.”
“The sisters” attacked Andy just like Red had supposed. They tried to rape him but he fought back. They didn’t succeed but instead they abused him badly. Like that it kept going.
Two years later Andy was promoted from “the laundry room” to working with the roof. For two months he tarred the roof with his friends and luckily he got away from the sisters.
He started to get closer to Red and the others. He exchanged his bank services with the guards and received bear for his friends in return. That made them feel like free men and they started to respect Andy.
When the job was done he had to go back to the laundry, and “the sisters” were also there waiting for him. This time he got so badly hurt that he had to be hospitalised for two months.
Bogs, one of “the sisters”, was put in isolation for one week. When he got back the guards were waiting for him in his cell. He got so beaten up that he couldn’t walk again.
Bogs was transferred to another institution and “the sisters” never touched Andy again.

When Andy got back his friends wanted to welcome him. They gave him a collection of stones and a big poster of Rita Hayworth.
He got transferred to the library where he could continue to help the guards with their declarations. He expanded the library and that kept his mind occupied.

A new prisoner arrived. His name was Tommy Williams and he was a young thief. He had been given two years for stealing a TV. Andy gave him the opportunity to graduate.
During Tommy’s first year Andy taught him to read, write and count.
Andy had already built a library and his next challenge was to help Tommy graduate from high school.
Tommy told Red about a guy he earlier had spent prison time with, who had boasted about that he had killed a golf teacher and “the tasty bitch” he had been with. The best of all was that her husband got prison for it.
When Red told Tommy what Andy was in for, Tommy assumed that Andy was the husband. He told Andy the same thing he told Red. Andy went on with the story to Superintendent Norton. Andy wanted to bring his case back up to court.
Norton failed to believe the story. Andy got furious and then Norton put him in isolation for two months. He also killed Tommy, so he couldn’t testify and give Andy his freedom back.
When Andy got out of the cell he made Red promise to visit a certain place and look under a rock for something if he ever got out. He told Red about his dreams, to live near the ocean and to build his own boat. Red answered that he thought those dreams were foolish. Andy said: “You can make two choices, get busy dying or get busy living” and walked away. Red thought Andy was acting weird and was worried that he maybe planed to hang himself.
That night Andy escaped trough a hole in the wall that he had made, inch by inch, with the rock hammer during his twenty years in prison. He crawled 500 yards trough the drain tunnel and ended up in the river.

After a while Red receives a blank postcard stamped in Fort Hancock, on the border to Mexico. “Andy Dufresne crawled through a tunnel of shit and came out clean on the other side.” And now he was on his way to Zihuatenejo, a city at the Pacific Ocean.
Red was very happy that Andy had escaped, but missed his old friend a lot.
He had always thought that Andy’s dreams were unrealistic, but it was because his dreams that Andy had made it.

A few years later Red got approved to be set free.
He went to ...
