Asperger’s Syndrome: How does it affect Christopher Boone on his journey?
Different people can think different. I think that it both helps him and makes it difficult for him. Why? As we remember, Christopher starts the book with describing a crime, a murder that happens in his neighbourhood. But it is a different sort of murder, because it is a dog that is killed. So Christopher is trying to solve this crime.
And there the Asperger’s Syndrome starts to affect him. Because of his different way to see things, to understand things, he can see much more details and connections between things. And that helps him in his detective work. Christopher is great in mathematics too, which is also very helping. And the most extreme thing is that he has impressive memory. But there are no more positive things that the Asperger’s can offer. Christopher’s handicap makes it very difficult for him to communicate with other people, to understand feelings. To understand lies, jokes, sarcasm, love. He does not understand those, and it is not his fault. He hates being touched. He is afraid of talking to strangers, to be in crowded places, to be in new places at all. He hates yellow and brown. He screams when he is angry, confused, and groans when he can not handle the situation. He can not eat food that touches another sort of food. All this things makes it difficult for Christopher to live a normal life.
He lives in a small town with his Father, because his Mother died from a heart attack. But she really didn’t. It is just what his Father told him. Christopher knows what truth and lies are, and he knows that he can trust people that never lie to him. Under his investigation he found some letters addressed to him from his Mother. He got confused, because his Father told him that she was dead. And this is when he realised that his Father lied to him. When his Father came home, he found Christopher with the letters in his hand, lying on the bed. First he got angry, but than he realised what was wrong. So he told Christopher the two things he lied about: about Wellington, the dog, and about his Mother. Christopher didn’t understand why his Father lied. And why Father killed Wellington, the dog.
After that he got afraid of his Father. He thought that Father could kill him like he killed the dog. So the same night he left Fathers home, and got to the train station, to catch a train to London. Why to London? On the letters that his Mother sent to him she wrote down her address. Christopher memorized the address and knew that she lived in London.
It wasn’t easy for a special boy like him to go alone by train to London. Even if he was 15 years old, he was very scared and confused. But at least he got to the Capital City, and there he went by underground to his Mothers house. When he met her there, he realised that she left his Father for Mr. Shears, Mrs. Shears ex – husband. He wanted to stay there, but Mr. Shears didn’t.
After a fight Mother took Christopher back to Swindon. When he was still in London, Father came and was trying to take Christopher home. But he still didn’t trust Father. But back in Swindon, they started to spend more time together, he and Father. And Christopher got the dog he was always dreaming about – a Golden Retriever called Sandy.
This story got a happy end. I liked many things in this book, for example language, Christopher’s way to be, the action. You could really follow t...
