Jack Lucas is a cynical and arrogant guy working as a radio host. There was a stupid guy who always called him to get advice. One day everything goes wrong and the man turns out to be a psychotic killer. He murderes a woman after talking to Jack, so Jack blames himself for the woman’s death.

A few years later, he gets attacked and almost killed. He is rescued by a homeless man named Parry and his friends. Suddenly, he gets to know that the woman who was killed by the psychotic man was this guys Parry’s wife and that her death had changed Parry’s life totally. From being a teacher and a pretty wealthy and happy young man, he had become homeless and weird. Jack starts to feel responsible of him. He tries to make Parry’s life better because of that.

This may sound a little bit confusing, and believe me, the whole movie is confusing!

Character analysis

Parry was a normal person with a happy life until one day, when his whole life is thrown upside-down. His wife got shot when they are at a resturant. Parry is totally changed. After that day he spends his life searching for the Holy Grail, that will save his soul. He is looking for someone that will help him to get rid of the Red Knight. The Red Knight is something that is following him in his fantasy.
Even that he’s kind of weird, he’s a nice person. He wants people to be happy and enjoy their lifes. He is an adorable person, kind and caring. You really want him to success in his attempts to get the girl he wants, because you will think that he’s worth it.

Robin Williams does a good work as Parry. He makes the character as strange and confusing as you want him to. He is pretty realistic and amusing.

Jack is a person you won’t like in the beginning. He doesn’t care about a thing. All he thinks about is himself. He ignores his girlfriend that loves him a lot.
Also his life changes totally when he gets to know the poor guy Parry. Instead of always set himself into first place he realizes that there are other persons that are important too. You’ll like his personality more and more during the film. He doesn’t try to be the perfect man, he’s just himself but in a nicer way than before.
He’s not good at showing his feelings.

Jeff Bridges plays Jack and he’s pretty good at it. He seems to be confused and as crazy as it is required for the role.

Conflicts

To me, the clearest conflict is the one that is going on inside Jack’s head. He’s fighting with himself and his senses of guilt. He wants to help Parry, in order to get the annoying thoughts out of his brain. Through the whole film you can see him fighting with himself. He tries to do everything for Parry, because he can’t relax knowing that he has turned an other man’s life into a mess.
Jack and his girlfriend often fighted a lot about their love and so on.

Themes

The film is mainly about forgiveness and love. How to find love, and how much your life can change when someone you love dies. It’s also about having senses of guilt and how to help other people.

Personal opinion

I didn’t like the movie at all. It was boring and confusing. Half through the movie I had no idea why they were looking for the Holy Grail, because I missed the story about the Fisher King in the beginning. Well, after a friend explained it to me I hoped to understand more but no, I didn’t. The film was still bad and confusing.

The story pretty much sucked due to my opinion. It wasn’t amusing at all, just a lot of conflicts and strange characters. The worst thing was when the Red Knight showed up. Come on, a freaky creature wearing an old, red curtain sitting on a horse? That totally blowed up all the few grains of interest I had left when I first saw the Red Knight. That was so stupid. If I should have illustrated the movie with one picture, I would probably use that one. You have to see it to believe it.

Also pretty annoying was the sound. The music and the sound effects were really loud and you could hardly hear what they said when they were talking. That wouldn’t have been so annoying if there was subtitles there, but since it wasn’t it was pretty irritating. Imagine missing whole parts of a conversation just because of bad sound. I mis...
