The Train
One-way ticket to terror
Diane Hoh

Introduction:

This review that I have made describes a little about the book, my own thoughts of the plot and the characters in it. “The Train” is a thriller that is taking place on a train heading for San Francisco with a group of students as its cargo. But there is something with them on the train and suddenly some of them are mystically attacked.

Development:

The main characters in the book are Hannah Deaton, Mack McComber, Kerry Oliver and Lewis Reed.
Hannah is the one that we follow through the book, seeing through her eyes.
When I read the book it seemed to me that she is wise, probably the wisest of them all, she came up with the best ideas when the rest couldn’t figure something out. She was also emotional, she was the only one who felt sympathy for the “nerds” in the book.
Mack, Hannah’s boyfriend, is a tall, muscular boy that isn’t afraid of anything, at least Hannah thinks so. Then we have Kerry’s boyfriend Lewis, he’s not as tall as Mack and not as strong either but he and Mack share the same personality. They are both very kind and they always listen to the girls, believing everything they say.
Kerry is obsessed by fashion and clothes so her luggage contains only of her clothes and her make-up.

These four friends are joining a school trip from Chicago to San Francisco by train. In the beginning they are all full of joy and excitement until they discover that there is a coffin on the train, Frogs Coffin.
They guiltily confess one by one all the nasty things they did to Frog before he died in a car crash, burned to death.
Later on they are one by one viciously attacked and it seems like Frog has come back for revenge.
They continue the trip unwilling to give up, hoping that the attacks will end, but it’s just getting worse…

I find the book a little creepy and I got startled several times. Once you have started reading the book you can’t stop cause it’s so enthralling. The author fills you with horror and her writing style is very terrifying. She doesn’t only scare you from train trips she makes you think about how it must have been as a person that everyone is ganging up against, harassing him. She made at least me to feel sorry for Frog and the few friends he had.

Quote from page 90-91.

"The bunk, already made-up, fell forward, and Hannah clambered up the ladder and onto the bed. Her knee hit something. She couldn't see, but she knew there was a small reading light up there. Her hand reached out, her fingers searching the Wall for the switch.
As her fingers fumbled along the panelling, she noticed a sharp, oddly unpleasant odor. In the dark-ness, she tried to make out the shape of the long, bulky object on the bed. Had Kerry sneaked in a garment bag full of clothes and stashed it up here, figuring she'd move it before they went to bed that night? It seemed like the kind of thing Kerry would do. At last Hannah's fingers found the light switch. She turned it on.
It wasn't much of a light. The little bulb provided only a faint, sickly glow.
But, faint though it was, the glow illuminated the thing in Kerry's bunk.
And it wasn't a garment bag.
Hannah's mouth dropped open, but no sound emerged. Her eyes fastened in horror on the dis-gusting thing lying there on its back, stiff and un-forgiving, emanating a strange odor. The eyes stared, unseeing, up toward the ceiling and the face was raw and ruined - a face she had once known - a face almost unrecognisable because of the blazing inferno that had tortured it, and nearly consumed it…
She had been right, after all.
Frog Drummond was not in his coffin where he belonged.
Frog Drummond was in Kerry's bunk.”

Conclusion:

The book is quite easy to read and the story really makes you bite on your fingernails forcin...
