INTRODUCTION

I chose to write about this site because I think it is very fun to play there, and it is a really good way to make the time go faster. You also meet other people from all over the world; China, Japan, Australia, Ireland – even from Iceland. It is also a good way to learn English, since it is an English-speaking site. Now, enjoy my work.

THE SITE

Neopets is a virtual pet site where you can create your own pets to feed, play and fight with, meet other people to chat and have fun with. It was mainly created by Adam Powell and Donna Williams in 1999 for bored student, but has more and more been rated as a Childs-site for children in the age of 12-14 years, but can of course be used by people way over that age. Adam sold the site to Doug Dohring in less than a year after the creation, and in 2003 the revenue was reported to be about 175 million dollars.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Neopets is the largest pet-site at the moment; it has over 55 million accounts. But each of these accounts are not for one person per account, most of them are inactive accounts that have either been “frozen” because the user was breaking some rules, or just because people does not use them. Sand many of them are also multiply accounts for one user. Every user is allowed to have 5 accounts, but is only allowed to play games and dailies to earn points on one of them. The other four is for safekeeping only, or to put your pets if they have a rare and expensive colour you have established for it to get a so-called “hidden avatar”, and do not want to put in the pound if a friend can’t keep it for you, since every account only can hold 4 pets. If you want to have more pets on the same account, I recommend another site named www.subeta.org, were you can hold up to 5 pets per account, and up to 10-15 pets if you have a gold account.

MAGICAL PAINTBRUSHES AND LUCKY-WHEELS

Pets can be “painted” using special magical paintbrushes, potions or other rare items.
There are many different colours, and you can view them all on fan sites or at the rainbow pool which you can get to by pressing “Shops”, and when you can see the picture press the rainbow-pool (you can’t miss it) and there you can see different links to press to get to different places in the rainbow pool. You also paint your pets at this place with the Paintbrushes.

The Paintbrushes are very rare, and cannot be bought in regular shops or user shops.
They can be bought in trades and auctions however, and somewhere in the neopian world there is a hidden tower – I won’t tell you where – where they sell some of the most expensive brushes. Some of these brushes can cost several millions of neopoints, but of course there are ones that cost much less. And you have to play games to get those points, but you could also be lucky to win points from luck-wheels of other stuff that you can to once a day (or more often if the instructions says something else than every 24 hours). And remember to NEVER beg to get a paintbrush or magical item, or any item for that matter, from another user – that could get you frozen.

DISEASES AND CURES

If your pet should get sick, which could be through a random event or something you fed it, you should go to the hospital, which can be found in the on the shops page, and check out what cure is needed for the disease and then check if it is buyable and if you can afford it.
If it is too expensive, you can always go to the kind healing-faerie at the healing springs, which is in the Faerie Land. She says some magical words and something happens to your pet, if you are lucky she will cure your pet, but if not, just wait half an hour and try again, since you can visit her every thirty minutes. You can visit the healing springs even if your pet isn’t sick; you can get other events from her. Like, if your pet is hungry she might make so it isn’t anymore, or she might give you a magic potion to give to your pet is its hp (short for health-points) are gone. You can also get magical snowballs to use in the battledome.

ADVENT CALENDAR AND PETPETS

Every day in the month of Celebrating (December) you can get a present from the advent calendar. You get a little hint of what it could be on the little video that appears on the first page of the calendar. To get your prize, press the ‘Collect my prize’ button. A page with your prizes will show up and the items will be sent to your inventory. To get to the Calendar, either press the calendar-picture on the first page of the site or go to Terror Mountain and there will be a small house with the text ‘Advent Calendar’.
Your pet can also have a Petpet, which is just as it sounds; a pet for your pet. There are several hundreds of these little critters, so you have a huge selection to pick from.
You can at any time take away the Petpet from your pet, it will then be put in your inventory. There are also Petpetpets; a pet for your Petpet, but these cannot be taken away from your Petpet. And if you take away the Petpet from your pet, the Petpetpet will disappear forever, so you should be really sure before you take away the Petpet.

VISIT SHOPS AND MAKE A WISH TO THE WISHING WELL

There is many different shops were you can buy food, clothes, school-stuff, candy and much, much more. There are also user shops, which the users of neopets have created to sell the stuff they have gotten by playing the site. You cannot price your stuff over 100.000 neopoints, if you do the price will go down to zero and the stuff will not be shown in the shop.
To show off your items you can use a special gallery which you create just like you create your shop, and if you have a shop but not a gallery you have the opportunity to turn your shop into a gallery, and then the gallery will be as big as the shop was; the bigger the gallery/shop is, the more stuff you can hoard in there. But if you turn your shop into a gallery, you will have to start from scratch if you want to open a new shop, since you cannot change your gallery back to a shop. There is also a wishing well were you can make a wish and throw in any amount of points you’d like to, and if you are lucky, the well might grant your wish.

GAMES

There are also many games on the site. Most of them are flash-games, which can only be used if you have a version of the program flash, which you can download for free on the internet, and some games are card-games and luck-games which do not need flash to work.
However, to play games and earn points, you will have to have a pet. So be sure to create one before you play any games if you haven’t yet, cause you cannot do very much on the site without one. There are many different pets; at the moment there are over forty different species so you will most likely find a pet you like.

TRADE YOUR ITEMS WITH OTHER USERS

There is also a trading centre, where you can trade items with other users. This place is for buying more expensive stuff, which cannot be bought in the user shops. However, most people won’t trade stuff that are too expensive there since there sometimes are glitches that can do so you lose your item or neopoints, so if you want to buy items that are even more expensive, you can always go to the auctions. Most people rely on the auctions more than they do on the trades.

VISIT FAR AWAY WORLDS AND GO TO CONSERTS

Neopets have many different worlds, like Faerieland, Mystery Island and Lost Desert.
So the Neopia Central isn’t the only place where you can buy stuff.
And in other worlds there are different events, like in Tyrannia there is a concert hall where there is a show every day, with neopets famous bands.
Some of these bands are: The Twisted Roses, Jazzmosis and Yes Boy Ice Cream.
But in order to see these concerts, you will have to buy a ticket, which you can buy either from the Ticket Booth right next to the concert hall, or buy in a user shop. Without this ticket, you won’t be able to get in; there are no tricks to see the bands without one.

NEGATIVE

But as with many sites, there are bad things about neopets.
For example, the staff does not often listen to what the users has to say, and this is one of the biggest reasons that people quit playing neopets or get frozen. They often get frozen for no reason, or if there is a reason it is often a generic one that has little or no explanation at all, and it can take up to over a year to get their accounts back, if they even get a response on their complaint-mail. And most of these aren’t answered.
And another bad thing is that the items that makes the game fun, like paintbrushes and stuff like that, are so expensive that the users have to play games almost every day for a couple of months to even get what that item costs, and the games barely gives out enough points at a time. You can play a flash-game as many times as you’d like, but only send in your score three times a day, and you can only get a maximum of 1000 neopoints/play. That means you can only get a maximum of 3000 neopoints/game.
And when a user finally reach their goal, the prices of the items has often been rising so that the person has to save even more, and sometimes the item does not have the desired effect anymore.

Some other bad things is that there are quite a few bad random events that either steal neopoints of re-colour you pets, like turning them into default colours (Red and Blue, for instance) or baby. Sometimes the colour-changes can be good, if it happens to a pet you haven’t spent much or no neopoints on, but you can lose millions of neopoints if it happens to, for example, a pet you painted Royal, a really expensive colour worth at least 5 millions.

Some rules on the boards are not looked over if they are followed, so they overflow with posts like “My pet wants a girlfriend” or “My pets want to mate” or something like that.
It is against the rules to give pets mates and post ...
