Matilda has just left home. She has finished school and is spending a year before going to university. To fund her planned trip to South America, she goes to work on a fruit farm in Devon. She''''s looking forward to an endless freedom - her childhood has been hard and sometimes sad. Her parents are very strict and cold, mainly because they lost a son when he was eight years old. Matilda was five when her brother died and she remembers that time with great pain - she suffered too, but no one ever properly let her feel sad or understood her. And after her brother''''s death, her parents never recovered. So when they want her to join them in the big house they all live in a big house on the hill, and meet their leader, Peter, she is ready and willing.
She doesn''''t realize that she is dangerously involved in a religious cult, and that she is being brainwashed and drugged in preparation for a mass suicide, planned by the pathologically leader Peter. He''''s going to burn all of them alive, because he believes it will save their souls for God.
There''''s another strand through the book: it''''s put 25 years later, in prison, where the cult leader is coming to the end of his 25 year sentence for mass murder. He is being visited by an old woman. He is clearly trying to man...
