Nelson Mandela was born in 1918. He grew up in a small village in South Africa. He went to collage and he studied law. By this time he joined ANC. It stands for the African National Congress, and it was a group of black people who fought for democracy and equal rights for the blacks. They were against apartheid, which was a system that separated black from white people.
At first the ANC only used peaceful methods in their struggle. Blacks throughout Africa went on strike; they demonstrated and protested against apartheid. But the police and the government tried to stop the protests. The police once killed 69 of the blacks that had protested. When the government found out that a two-days strike was planned, 10 000 blacks were arrested.
The ANC now started to use violence to make the government listen to them. For example they blew up several official buildings. This was problematic for Nelson, who was connected with the bombings. In 1962, Mandela was arrested and put in trial. At first he was sentenced to five years’ labour, but when more serious charges were brought against him, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
When Nelson was 44 years old, he was sent to Robben Island of Cape Town, a prison on an island surrounded by the rough sea. While he was prisoner on Robben Island he was forced to break limestone in a quarry. It was very hard. He educated other prisoners to fight for freedom. The government stopped this by moving him to another prison, Pollsmoor.
While Nelson was in prison, he became more and more famous all around the world. Even the government had respect for him, the government that was keeping him in prison. In 1989, FW de Klerk became president of South Africa. He understood that the government had to make peace with the ANC. He decided to release Nelson Mandela.
