Stockholm is becoming more and more segregated. In a comparison between Bromma, a district inhabited by the higher social classes and Rinkeby, a district where the middle income are half as high as in Bromma, we can see huge differences in the welfare of the inhabitants.
We often choose to think of Sweden as a equal country. A place where it doesn’t matter if you are man or woman, black or white. But when looking at the latest statistics from Brå- the council of crime prevention, and Usk’s statistics about the districts and their population something becomes pitifully clear. The life of the youth living in Rinkeby differs totally from the life of youth in the richer district Bromma.
When as much as 30% less of the students in one district is qualified to highschool something must be wrong. Even though Rinkeby is a district with many persons with foreign background and low knowledge in Swedish, it seems like there is something more causing these huge differences.
Maybe the reason can be find in the students’ environment- the district where they grew up. The life in Rinkeby is harder than most other Stockholm district. A higher percentage are unemployed, or receiving sickness benefit. The days per year that the average person living in Rinkeby stays home from work are twice as many as those that the average person living in Bromma has per year. There is a great difference in income levels. If you live in Bromma, you probably have twice as much many as someone living in Rinkeby.

Life conditions are totally different in these two districts. When comparing the life of the parents of young people in the compared districts, the inequality between the schoolresults don’t seem as surprising any more. But one thing that still surprises me is that nothing has been done to erase at least some of the inequality. Surely, the politicans have tried. But why haven’t they succeded?
