Charlie Bucket lives with his mother and father, and Grandpa Joe and Grandma Josephine, and Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina, in a wooden ramshackle just outside a great town. Charlie Bucket is a pale, thin and poor little boy. He loves chocolate and once every year, on his birthday he gets a Wonka’s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight chocolate bar. And this fact leads us to the next person in this story. Mr Willy Wonka is the owner of the enormous chocolate factory, the largest and most famous factory in the world. Willy Wonka is an inventor and a very mysterious man. He was the one who first came up with the idea of never melting ice cream, chewing-gum that never loses its flavour and sugar ballons.
The plot takes place in the town were Mr Wonka’s chocolate factory is situated. Twice a day Charlie walks right past the factory on his way to school and back home. He loves the smell of melting chocolate that comes from the factory and wishes that he someday could go inside the factory and see what it was like in there. His wish comes true when he finds one of the five Golden Tickets. Together with the other four children and their parents, he and his Grandpa Joe follows Willy Wonka into the chocolate factory. Inside the factory they get see the most remarkable inventions and the workers – the Oompa-Loompas. The four children misbehave and one by one they disappear into the factory. The children’s parents are guided out from the factory by the Oompa-Loompas. Finally Charlie and Grandpa Joe are the only ones left. I don’t want to reveal the end but the ending includes a big change for Charlie and his family.
Roald Dahl was a British novelist, short story author and screenwriter. He was born in 1916 and died in 1990. During his life he wrote both children and adult books. Charlie and the chocolate factory were published in 1964 and have won several awards and have been filmed twice. During World War II he was a pilot in the Royal Air Force. His plane was shot down during a flight and Roald Dahl became blinded. Dahl was rescued and taken to a first-aid post in Mersa Matruh, where he regained consciousness, but not his sight, and was then taken by train to the Royal Navy hospital in Alexandria. There he fell in and out of love with a nurse, Mary Welland. Dahl had fallen in love with her voice while he was blind, but once he regained his sight, decided that he no longer loved her. Doctors said he had no chance of flying again, but in February 1941, five months after he was admitted to the hospital, he was discharged and passed fully fit for flying duties. Roald Dahl died of a rare blood disease on 23 of November 1990. His family gave him a sort of Viking funeral. He was buried with his snooker cues, some very good burgundy, chocolates, HB pencils and a power saw.
I liked this book very much. The langue was tricky sometimes especially the describing words, but when I read the whole context I understood. The book has a flow, new things happens all the time, sometimes too quickly. It was a bit too simple to read but on the other hand it is a children’s book. I would recommend my twelve year old brother (furthermore candy lover) to read ...
