Book Review May 2007

I have read a book called Warrior Girl which was written by Pauline Chandler. It takes place in France during the 15 century when it is war between the Englishmen and the Frenchmen. The book is an adventure and it’s about Marianne and Jehanne. Marianne has lost her voice after she had seen her mother being murdered by Englishmen. Her father had been dead for years, even him killed by Englishmen. Marianne travels to her cousin Jehanne who thinks God is speaking to her. God wants her to lead the Frenchmen against the Englishmen. Jehanne and Marianne travel a long way to persuade the people that Jehanne is the perfect leader for the Frenchmen. Many people believe in her when she says she does Gods will, but many people do also not believe her. She becomes leader and fights towards the Englishmen side by side with Marianne because that’s Gods will. Marianne herself has trouble because of her father inheritance, a property called La Paix. Her uncle sir Gaston wants to have it too.

Jehanne is farm girl who can’t read or write. She is calm and friendly person who cares more about other than she cares about herself. When she listens to Gods words it feels like the world is stopping. She is impatient with her mission from God. She don’t want to wait, she wants to do it straight away.

Marianne is dumb, confused and calm. She is very down to earth and careful. She cares very much for Jehanne and wants revenge on the Englishmen because they killed her parents.

A person I didn’t liked was sir Gaston. He was selfish and mean. He didn’t get La Paix because his brother gave it to his wife, Marianne’s mother. He was the one who killed her to get the inheritance. But he didn’t succeed so in the book he’s looking for Marianne.

The book take place in the 15 century so I think the surroundings were very much nature. There were lots of trees, bushes, farms and meadows. The people were living in big knight castles. And the atmosphere was much more calm and quiet than it is now.

The title of the book is Warrior Girl. I think the book got its name after Marianne who never thought she would ever lift a sword, but she did it for her native country. She became a Warrior, just like her father.

Pauline Chandler got the idea of writing this book when she were standing in the place, on the market place in Rouen in northern France, where Jehanne d’ Arc were murdered at. Jehanne d’ Arc was a young farm girl who lived in the 15 century and helped the Frenchmen to drive away the Englishmen from many French cities. It says that when she was thirteen years old she started to hear heavenly voices that encourage her to save her native country from the Englishmen. When she was going to free Paris she became hurt and capture by the Burgundians who maltreated her and sold her to the Englishmen who judge her to death for Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was burned at the stake in the city Rouen in northern France.
Now she’s saint declared and she is also a patron saint for French soldiers.

The book have told me about how it were on the 15 century and I have also learned very much about Jehanne d’ Arc.

I was very touch by this book because I feel sorry for Jehanne who got so much responsibly and because it takes place in a time very far from here, I love to read about history and war. Even if war isn’t a good thing and I don’t want war, it’s very interesting to read about. That’s why I choose this book.

The book wasn’t so difficult to read, the only difficult thing with this bo...
