I have chosen to write about SSU, the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League (Sveriges socialdemokratiska ungdomsförbund). It is an organisation that started in 1917 and is affiliated with the to the Swedish Social Democratic Party and to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation. The ideology is that every individual shall have the possibility to become economically independent, by having a job that he/she has chosen by itself and without doing that on some ones expense. People being free and equal are the democratic socialists goal. SSU can also proudly present feminism as a part of the political program. As I said SSU started in 1917 after the Social democratic youth league broke loose and started a new leftwing political party. In October 27-28th the first congress with 45 elected delegates in peoples house in Stockholm. The first matter that SSU drove was voting-right for women.

And I’m not sure of how I started but I remember one of the girls in the SSU-district called home to my house and asked some questions, first if I wanted to do a course that the SSU-district had arranged, were we learned about the big ideologies, history about the party and other stuff. And one thing leads to another and here I am, a member of SSU.

Now is not the time to pretend that I’m a member of SSU ONLY because of my political interest, and that I want to make a difference – even though that is a big reason – but most because it is so darn fun. You probably have a big difficulty to imagine the spirit between a group of persons with the one and same objective/dreams in a single room. Or as in the summer during our election camp where we were a thousand, a little about that: In the fall/late summer of 2006 there were parliamentary elections in Sweden. The same summer SSU arranged a big camp for all SSU-members in Visby, Gotland. A thousand attended. At the same time there was the traditional Almedalsveckan (the week in Almedalen). So during the whole week SSU does something called “röja”, which means something like, being out on streets campaigning. But the biggest event in the week the leader of the Social Democratic Party leader held a speech in Almedalen in Visby, to which all thousand SSU:ers marched into from our campsite, a travel of a few miles (english miles that is) to show him our support. I personally have never (NEVER!) been up for a bigger event in my whole life. A thousand SSU:ers marching singing political songs and much like it.

The latest big event that I attended to were our DÅK, our districts own, you can call it congress (distriktsårskonferrens), were we discussed our own – the districts – political program, what we should force through, we elected a new chairperson, elected a new secretary, and members of the board. We thanked the reassigning ones, which became a little bit sad; some ended their membership right there, after the reassignment to the board. T...
