I believe that William Forrester and Jamal become friends since they have a lot in common. They both have the ability to write, and the unusual ability to really catch their readers. Neither one of them likes to brag about their art, since they both, and I too, believe that, “It’s the writers who write, for the readers to read”.
I think that the fact that Forrester only wrote one book, really interests Jamal. I understand Forrester for what he did, and I think that Jamal does too.
I’m not surprised that Jamal doesn’t perform as well as he could in lessons, since he wants to fit in with his friends, and neither one of them has been blessed with this “writing-ability”, that Jamal has been.
Watching this movie really made me think. Maybe being able to write isn’t just a blessing, but also a curse. Jamal feels that he can’t be himself, when his friends are around, and if something prevents you from being yourself, then perhaps it’s automatically a kind of curse. At least that’s what I think.
Forrester inspired me when he mentioned that he stopped writing since people tried to find meanings in his book. This made me think about all the analyses and discussions that I have done in the last year. Maybe everyone doesn’t want you to find a meaning in, or discuss their work. Perhaps many people that could be able to write the most amazing books haven’t written any because of this.
When Jamal called Forrester his teacher, I didn’t really react on it. I just thought, “Well, he is like a teacher to Jamal”. I thought so since Forrester has what it takes to be a teacher.
If I was to define a good teacher, I would probably just rattle off each and every one of Forrester’s qualities. Forrester is an almost perfect teacher, since he has written a book, he knows how to capture his readers, and he’s a bit odd, witch I believe is a demand, when it comes to being able to reach out to people. (When I say that Forrester is a bit odd, I am referring to the little “in-side out socks” thing).
One of the main things Forrester and Jamal have in common is of course their writing. Forrester became really curious about Jamal, when he first read Jamal’s little “journals”.
“This black kid from the suburbs, hanging out with his friends at the basketball court, not speaking proper English. How could he possibly be capable of writing such masterpieces”?
I think they both share a deep emotional relationship, that maybe they aren’t even aware of. They just feel comfortable when they’re with each other.
I believe that Forrester comes too Jamal’s school since, Jamal kept his promise not to tell anyone about his meetings with Forrester. And even though Jamal also broke his other promise, not to take anything that he had written in Forrester’s home, with him, I think Forrester felt that the fact that Jamal kept his first promise, weighed heavier.
I think that Mr. Crawford saw a lot of Forrester in Jamal, and therefore got reminded of what Forrester had done to him, every time Jamal was in his classroom. The fact that Jamal corrected him in front of his class, really upset Mr. Crawford, I think.
Jamal has a natural talent when it comes to literature, which Crawford has mostly forced out of himself.
This movie really meant a lot to me. I kind of recognized my self in Jamal, except for the fact that he has always hidden his talent from his friends, while I on the ot...
