Adriana and Àngeles

Jaunio is a rather tiny self proclaimed country situated in the north of Brazil, for an unknowing spectator, the capital is just like most other metropolitans, a chaotic, but peaceful scene with a larger variety of personalities than there is of flowers in a botanic garden. But. Jaunio had of course a mayor; one full with betrayal and evil.
-Corruption was one of his trademarks. Taxes fell into his pocket; he was, at the expense of the people, filthy rich. This mayor was, however quite paranoid, and generally avoided to be seen in public. Few had seen him, and those who had, had vanished like fog. And further more, there was a rumour that he had done a facial surgery, thus getting it even harder to recognise him. He had a son, but he had abandoned him when he was a baby, worried that he might one day try to take over his throne. His secret service terrorised the population beneath the surface, which the tourists never saw. In return, the people hated him.
But some did take action, and that was the U.M-the Underground Movement. It was consulted of men and women, from teenagers to grandparents; all of them were determined to put an end to this evilness. They knew that they were fighting an never ending battle, but they hoped that one day, they would get a breakthrough, so that they could get rid of the mayor.

Adriana locked the door, it was already five o’clock in the afternoon and the sun was already beginning to walk towards the horizon; she was on her way to the supermarket for some bread and vegetables, her father Juan, who worked as a carpenter was scheduled to come home at seven o’clock, he would be hungry after a whole day’s work, so it was important to have dinner ready before he came. He was the one who had brought her up and given her a cheerful child-hood, he was also Adriana’s only parent, since her mother had died soon after her birth. She had never known how it was to have a mother, and hadn’t thought much about it. But in the background of all teenage feelings, she felt that something was missing, it was a rather awkward feeling, it wasn’t grief, but it was something she couldn’t tell. Her father had in the last couple of weeks, been at work far longer than he used to be, and he would disappear in the middle of the night, not coming home before dawn.
To get to the supermarket, one will have to pass thorough the government building, in an ordinary city; this would be a simple task. But Jaunio is an exception, since the mayor frantically wanted money, a toll fee had to be paid. In the long term, this gave the mayor a smaller fortune. Luckily, Adriana’s father made a got profit working as a carpenter, and money wasn’t a big issue for them.
The walk to the supermarket took ten minutes, the sun was going down and cast shadows on the French style houses with their beautiful small balconies, the whole down town was filled with this warm orange-red colour. She used to daydream on these walks, her mind drifting away to a peaceful cottage in the countryside where no government existed. That is why she didn’t se the man standing with his back towards her. The collision was inevitable.
-Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t se you stand there. Just let me help you, she said, whiles starting to collect the newspapers that the man had held in his hand, obviously, he was selling them.
-Hey, no problem, but you shouldn’t walk around daydreaming like that, I mean, you could seriously get hurt. He replied
She was so focused that she didn’t even look up, it wasn’t until she was finished and handed over the papers that she saw him. He wasn’t really like a supermodel, but Adriana had never felt any fixation towards that kind of people. He had rather long, and a little bit curly dark hair, and looked like a Spanish, almost like Antonio Banderas…his eyes were mild and his lips looked soft and mushy. He wore simple clothes, and a pair of flip-flops, nothing peculiar in anyway, and nothing fancy. But there was something special with him; he looked so vulnerable, so fragile, but still so gentile, she just wanted to…No, she thought for herself-Don’t let him drag you into temptation. She walked away with, strangely, a feeling of satisfaction.

Alberto put down the phone; they had caught a member of the underground movement, being a mayor wasn’t easy, he though.
-Everybody wants to topple you of the thrown; everybody wants my money, he spoke for himself. The doors swung open and the guards came in. Between them they held a man, he looked as if he was in his late forties, his hear was still dark and intense, quite the opposite of the mayor’s, which was grey am dull.
–So, you work for the U.M? Let’s make it clear, I don’t like you, none of you, you are like insects, trying to eat my crop.
-Your crop? Your money is the people’s money and you stole it from them.
This is enough, we’ll have a chat later on, you and me, and then we’re going to decide what to do with you.
The man became anxious; he knew what faith had waited those who had seen the mayor.
-Get him into the interrogation room; I’ll be there in a second, Alberto said to the guards. He felt a little bit uneasy about catching this guy, as if he had caught a lion and the rest of the pack was after him. Hah, nonsense, your imagination, he said for himself, trying to get a bit of confidence.
The shopping bag was full, and she was on her way home, but she couldn’t stop thinking of that man, that Spanish looking man. There was something special about him, like all Spanish, he felt so passionate in some way, so passionate and intense, Just like Spanish, Adriana loved the Spanish language. Her father could speak it, it was far more beautiful than Brazilian. She passed the government building, while she was paying the toll fee to the guard, she saw a man being dragged down in the basement, just another of those poor U.Ms, she thought.
The apartment was full of the smell of food, she had spent almost an hour preparing it, and now she just waited for her father. But an hour later he had not yet come home, and she was getting anxious. He hadn’t been in an accident hadn’t he?
She sat down and waited, when suddenly the phone rang.
Alberto was going down to the cellar; he was looking forward to interrogate this man. But when he opened the cellar door he saw the man with a cell-phone, he rushed toward the man in order to take the phone, and the man frantically shouted some word before Alberto was over him. The phone he had held was no more, it had broken into three pieces.
- Now, you buffoon, you’ve lost your phone, but if you like to chat, you can do it with me. First, I want to know you name, your full name.
– Juan Lopez Riviera.
– Age?
– 52
– Family?
– Was married, daughter, otherwise no relatives.
– Employment?
– Carpenter
- Well Mr Riviera, who were you talking to on that phone, could it have been your daughter?
-Leave my daughter out of this. Yes, I spoke to her, and I told her to hide herself, I told her to find someone she trusted. But deep inside, Juan was worried; they didn’t have many social contacts, and certainly not any one they trusted. –You will never find her.
-Don’t take thing for granted. But at least, Mr Riviera might know what I am going to do with him, doesn’t he?
-You are a killer, I know that, but if you kill me, you’re going to get even more enemies, I do more damage dead than alive.
-I don’t care much about you U.Ms, you’re just a little road bump on my way towards success. Alberto stood up, and knocked the man unconscious.
-You rat, don’t try to threaten me.

Panic spread through Adriana, the sun was now below the mountains, and darkness fell, her father had told her to hide herself, but where would she hide? Never before had she had she been forced to leave their apartment, and the least to be forced to hide herself. She took ransacked the apartment of money, packed some underwear and left the apartment. The city was full of lights from the windows, and music danced around the streets and gave a false feeling of warmth and security. She knew that the government had captured her father, but he was just a carpenter, what harm could he have done? Her father was in great danger and she could sense that. Somehow she had to get him free.
Some things occur by faith, some things can only happen in one way, and faith decides how it is going to happen. A person’s life is built up of these happenings, and as the happenings gather, they start to influence one’s faith. What is known is that faith beats all odds, and against all odds, faith is the sole winner. In this moment, faith acted.
Al loud ”buff” sounded when Adriana ran into the same man she collided with before.
-You seem to have an urge to run into me?
-I’m terribly sorry, she said.
-Look, the government has captured my father, but he doesn’t work for the Undergro…
-Schhh! He pulled her into the nearby alley; it was dark, and almost pitch dark if the stars above hadn’t lit up the sky.
Don’t talk about it with large words. I tell you this because you seem to trust me, and so, I trust you. The U.M is going to make a coup d’état, it’s happening on tomorrow, we need as many people as possible. If you want to help your father, join us. But the price could be high. I would understand if you said no, you have so much to loose. I do this because I have nothing to loose. I have no parents, and I have no education.
-If that is the thing I have to do to save my father, then I’ll do it, she said.

Alberto had made his decision; the man was to be executed tomorrow night, with sixty others of the U.M. The numbers of captured antagonists had risen as fast as an avalanche the last year; surely, it must be his men who had become more efficient.
Now it was time to relax a bit, and maybe take some gin.
-Yeah, some gin now, that would be smooth, he though, and sat down in his home office. Changed into something more comfortable than his suit and poured a glass of dry gin. He walked to his balcony and sat down to admire the stars along with the alcohol.
Alberto had once been a poor teenager, his mother had died when he was a child, and his father was murdered for money by bandits. Although he was economically poor, he was rich, because he had love, and the love was responded. He had met her whilst selling fruits on the market, and they had fallen in love. They had a son and he loved him. But when Alberto had become rich, she had left him and his son. Full of anger, Alberto had left his son to an orphanage. And thus he though, he might not only had clean up all the rest of his foolish feelings, he had also made sure that his wealth was secure.

By now it was dawn and the sun was going up. Adriana entered what seemed to be a little wardrobe in an apartment in the suburbs. When Àngeles, which the man was called, opened the backside of the wardrobe, she expected to se a huge storage like room full with U.Ms, planning and frantically working. But all she saw was a little room, not much bigger than the wardrobe itself.
-You expected a large main office didn’t you? Well, I tell you that we have no, that would be to risky, since Alberto catches some of us ones in a while, he would easily get hold of it. So we rely on good communication. We’ve decided to attack the governmental building tomorrow, before nightfall. This might come a bit sudden, are you sure that you want to do this? Otherwise, you have to be imprisoned here until the coup is over, we can’t be sure that you will keep quiet if you left.
For Adriana there was only one answer to this question.

They woke up in the morning, aware that they would write history that day.
At the same time Alberto also woke up, and knew that by executing the U.Ms, he would write history.
Àngeles gave Adriana a huge rifle, some ammunition and a pair of grenades. Everybody was fitted with the same equipment, and they started to pack every weapon into boxes. They were to be carried into position, so that they could on a given time, attack with the element of surprise.
They jumped into Àngeles little VW golf, and went away. The journey to downtown seemed to take an eternity. Suddenly, when they were almost in the city, they were stopped by a road blockade. An armed guard stepped forward. His finger was on the trigger. Adriana recognised him, she had paid him at the government building yesterday. So she stepped out before Àngeles had time to think.
-God morning officer.
-God morning, what brings you and your companions here?
-Sir, we have been visiting my grandparents, and we’re heading back to my apartment, you saw me in the government building yesterday, when I was on my to the market, you remember that?
-Oh yes, of course. Now I remember, you were that pretty girl huh?
He said and blinked with his eye. Adriana couldn’t do anything else than nod and hope that he would let them through.
-You can pass. Move along.
Adriana jumped back into the car again. She saw that Àngeles were all wet of sweat.
-Tu eres loco! We could have blown the whole operation! And if we do that, not only do we send ourselves into certain death, we also send your father and the rest of the prisoner to the same faith!
-But I didn’t! As a matter of fact, I saved us!
-Yes, that’s true, but never do that again if we are stopped! It’s too risky.

They hid the weapons as planned, the coup would start at two o’clock, but Adriana didn’t see anyone else than some farmers unpacking their merchandise and businessmen who were sipping coffee in the nearby cafes. What she didn’t know was that the farmers merchandise included Ak47s, Dragunov sniper rifles, homemade grenades and a lot of ammunition. The businessmen’s suitcases were hiding submachine guns and they had, instead of cell phones and hand computers they had a stack of spare magazines.
At exactly two pm, they attacked. And hell broke loose. The governmental soldiers, although much better equipped with weapons, had been taken by surprise. There was fierce fighting for over two ours, and both sides suffered of high rate of casualties.
The snipers were the main killing force, every bullet was a hit, and the soldiers fell down like domino bricks.
Alberto was still in the middle of his siesta when the gunshots woke him up. He saw his men outside the window; one after one of them was pinned down.
Adriana, Àngeles and a handful of the rebels went inside the building while the others was securing the outside parameters. The government had made a mistake forcing the population to enter the building whenever they had to go to the market. By doing this, the population knew the bottom floor inside and out. They knew the potential hiding places and they knew the best escape routes.
When Alberto heard the voices in the bottom floor, and in the emergency stairway, he knew that the battle was lost. The voices grew stronger and them, three men and a woman were surrounding him. There was one figure that seemed peculiarly similar than what he had looked like before his operatio...
