In the first half of the book it’s actually quite hard to tell who is the main character. However in the second half it becomes clear that the main character is in fact col. Kurt Steiner.
Steiner is a young and alert man. A very important thing to remember about him, is that he’s not a nazi. He’s just a regular German soldier on a mission, that’s going to benefit “his” country. In the beginning of the book he actually tries, and almost manages to, save a Jewish girl that’s about to be sent of to one of the many concentration camps. He “has nothing for nor against Jews”.
It’s quite odd, that even though Steiner and his men are the “bad guys” in the book, you often find yourself rooting for them to get out of trouble, get to England and finally kill that darn Winston Churchill. Right at the beginning of the book, he captures my attention. He’s mere a German soldier, at the moment unarmed, standing in front of one of the most highly placed SS-leader, and Steiner is actually standing up to him, questioning whether the plan, or rather order, is even viable.
I believe that Steiner isn’t really a “bad” person. War brings out the worst in people, and frankly, he’s just following orders. Lots of politicians get killed every year, whether there’s a war going on at the moment or not. Winston Churchill wasn’t an personal enemy of Steiner’s. But he was an enemy of Germany, and seeing as Steiner is a German patriot, and soldier, Churchill becomes, indirectly, an enemy of him to.

The title may not seem so appealing, but for me it was. “The Eagle has landed”, instantly lets you know, or at least suspect, that it’s a war-book. “The Eagle” is a code-name for the troop of parachutists, that land in England in the middle of the night to go after Churchill. The title made me want to get to the point in the book where the “Eagle” actually landed, and after that the book had caught my attention enough to get me to finish the book. In this case the title actually made me start reading the bo...
