A Film Review
Fanny Edfedlt 9B
I have seen the film Braveheart wich is directed by Mel Gibson, who also plays the main character. It is made in scotland where the story also take place. The genre of the movie is kind of a Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance and War, I suppose.
As I just mentioned, the film takes place in Scotland, in the late 13th century. It is a very hard time for the scottish inhabitants, seeing that the English consider that Scotland should belong to them. So they try to conquer the contry. The two contries have been that way for some time and it doesn´t seem to change. A man named Malcom Wallace, a single father to a very young boy, William, and his older brother, John. Decides to do something about their situation and convice the men in their village to fight for their freedom. The older one of his sons, John, follows him into battle. But unfortunately they die, fightning for liberty with a sword in their hand. They leave William Wallace alone in the world.
At Malcom and Johns funeral, Williams unkle, Argyle Wallace apear. He tells him who he is, they have never met. He is his new "guardian". Argyle tells William that they are going to travle somewhat. On the journeys he will learn to speak, and write both latin and french.
After meny years of traveling and growing up, William Wallace returns to his childhood home. The little cabin he used to live in, detroyed. So he starts to repair it. And you can see, that he is so happy being home again.
The king of scotland had died without an heir, so scotland stood without a king. And the king of England, Edward the Longshanks, was very determined to take over scotland. They had some power over scotland but couldn´t own it in the way that they would like to. They had placed Enlglish noblemen as soliders in all of the villages of scotland to look after the scots.
In the centrum of the village, a wedding is held place. The king had very recently decided that a new law should be. It was called "Prima noctis". It said that on the first night of a wedding, the noblemen should have right to sleep with the bride on her first night as married. Just so that they could breed the scots out of scotland. As longshanks says in the film "If we can''''t get them out, we breed them out". So at the wedding William wathces one of his childhood friends get all emotional torn apart by the fact that the noblemen are taking his wife in to bed that night.
At the wedding ceremony, William at once recognize a girl named Murron. She lived in the village when he was just a child. They fall in love and gets married in secret, since he is determined not to share her with some cheesy noble.
But things do not go as planed, one old nobleman discovers theys connection and tries to rape Murron. Willam comes to rescue at last moment and tries to save her. He puts her on a horse, and tells her to meet with him at the glade (Wich is their secret spot). But as when he gets there she isn´t there yet. In horror he discovers that the nobles had caught her! And when he arrives he prompt understand that they already had killed her. In a heartbreaking wrath he attacks the noblemen and the other inhabitants helps him out.
At this moment in the film most of the action starts. William starts to fight back after all those years of opression towards scotland. He fights for freedom. He go to war with England and will not give up, even tough they are under armed and have no such thing as a heavy cavalry.
Now I can not write anymore, that would probably ruin the film if you have´t seen it yet. So.. SEE IT!!!
Reflection
Braveheart is a wonderfull film that I can see over and over again. I often say that some movies are my favourit, well, this is my favourit, not one of them, but THE favourit film. I must have seen it a couple of times.. Like.. 20.. or something, and I always cry. I absolutly love the character of William Wallace, and Hamish aswell, he is one of williams closest men and his best friend. The whole feeling in the film is absolutley faboulusley great! And the nature shots, it´s incredible!
One of my favourit quotes is this, wich he syas to an army that is on the edge of brakedown: "Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you''''ll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin'''' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they''''ll never take... OUR FREEDOM!"
And all that with a scottish accent. I get goosebumps down my spine, on my arms and every where ells! Just the fact that he fights for what he consider is right - Humanitys right to freedom. I think that Mel G...
