Across the barricades is a story about a protestant 16 yars old girl, Sadie Jackson and a 17 years old boy called Kevin McCoy. they live pretty near one another, outside Bangor in Ireland.
When they were kids they had fought each other. But an accident had happened to Kevin´s sister, Brede, and they had gone to the hospital. While they were at the hospital they had made friends with each other.
Severals years later Sadie works in a hatdepartment and Kevin in a scrapyard. They begin to go out with each other. Soon enough almost everyone in their neighbourhood had found out about it.
One night, after Kevin has gone out with Sadie, he is beatened down by his old frien, Brian Rafferty. meanwhile someone has painted "Here lives a traitor" on Sadie´s house.
Though both Kevin and Sadie are strong people, they begin to feel so tired about it all. Many times they decide to not see one another, but it doesn´t last long since they are so in love with each other.
Then, one evening, Kevin meets Mr. Blake, Sadie´s former teacher. He is a very friendly person. He helps Sadie and Kevin by giving Sadie a job as a housekeeper, and Kevin a job as a gardener. He also lets them use his house as a sanctuary. Sadie and Kevin really enjoy being with Mr. Blake.
But soon someone has found out about it, and starts to give Mr. Blake letters with the words "You´ve been warned". One night the tragedy happens. Someone burns down Mr. Blakes house, and he dies.
This is the worst thing that happened to the young lovers, because they feel that it´s their fault.
Kevin is starting to feel very depressed. He´s so sick of everything and everyone. Eventually he decides to go to England, and find a job. When he is about to board on the boat to England, Sadie is waiting for him. She has decided to go with him. Finaly they can live together without being followed.

I thought that the book was really good. It´s quite usual to do a story about two people, that falls in love with each other, but they are not allowed because perhaps they are from different classes, or their families doesn´t like each other. But still I liked "Across the barricades", because excitin things happened all the time, and I really liked Sadie´s and Kevin´s personalities. They were very strong, and they wouldn´t let anyone drag them away from each other. They were souls that wanted to be free, like birds in a cage. And finaly they made their own choice, and took their own path and moved to England. It reminded me about the first, and only book that I have cried to. I don´t remember the title, but it was about two siblings that falled in love with one another. They go through so mu...

Tack! Behöver knappt läsa min egen läxa, när jag kan ta nyckelpunkterna ur den här! Men så spännande som den är vill jag inte göra det...
