Summary

After a horrible summer with his mean relatives Harry returns to ”Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry”. Together with his friend Ron and his elder brothers they fly in a car to get there. Their little sister Ginny is also going to begin the school this year. But this year isn’t going to be a calm year. Harry and his friends get a new teacher in the subject Black magic, Professor Lockhart. He is hopeless and besides that, he doesn’t like Harry that much. He thinks that Harry does everything because he wants attention. And what is hiding in Hagrids past? The real problem at the school begins when somebody or something petrifies one Hogwarts pupil after the other. Is it Harry’s worse enemy, Draco Malfoy, or is it somebody else? Lots of things happen and it ends up with that everyone thinks that Harry is the one because he can talk to snakes. It also begins to spread roomers that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened.


About the writer

The writer’s real name is Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Before she got famous she lived in a cafe in Edinburgh together with her 3-month old daughter. She had separated from her husband and she had no money.

Suddenly one day, when a train between London and Edinburgh was late, she met Harry Potter. She came up with that he would begin at a school of witchcraft and wizardry. Later she figured out the name of the school, Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry. When the story was finished she showed it to a friend that liked it so much so Joanne let an agent look at it. The first agent didn’t like the story but then she went to another one and after that she was successful.

J. K. Rowling earned 80 million Swedish crowns on the first book and she is planning to write seven books in all together. There also is a movie about her first book. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone it’s called. The first book also won a lot of prices. One of them was the “ Triple Smarties Gold Award.


My opinion

I think that this book is a very funny and interesting book. I fell in love with it immediately. The book has really no message, it’s written just to entertain the reader. I have also read the first book and I think that it is necessary to read them in order to really understand the second book. Otherwise it is a real fantasy book and you can read it as a child as well as a grownup and enjoy it. If you compare the movie with the first book the story wasn’t exactly the same.
