(GOTHENBURG, Sweden) A terrible accident occurred on the night before Friday the 1st November in the city of Gothenburg in Sweden. It was Halloween and about four hundreds of teen-agers had gathered to celebrate the American holiday, but something went wrong, very wrong.



A large-scale blaze broke out in the storage house belonging to the Macedonian immigrant association, and since the fire spread so rapidly, many lives was sacrificed to the burning flames and the poisonous and deadly smoke. The party was held on the second floor in the building, but despite that many youngsters did not hesitate to throw themselves out of the hell that had broken loose. More than 60 kids lives was taken in the accident and something about 200 were injured, something that may could have been avoided if only half of the crowd was let in to the disco. Now the panic came quickly when the DJ announced that he spotted flames, and so did the fire.



The Swedish rescuing authorities have been subject of many involved and upset immigrants’ complains. They claim that the fire force prevented them to go in to save their friends. Identifying the bodies has been a hard task for the police since many of the dead did not have any id, or just a fake one to pass the guards. The disaster has gotten everyone’s attention in Sweden and the Swedish prime minister Göran Persson as well as the king Karl XVI Gustaf has expressed their compassion for the victims and their families. Almost everywhere in the country has silent minutes and thoughts of the involved people honoring the incident.



This was the biggest fire catastrophe in modern Swedish history, and overall since the ship Estonia sink and hundreds lost their lives.

The fire’s origin is still, almost three weeks later unknown and technicians work to find a reason. Rumors circulating in the area the morning after was speaking about arson, but later the same day the Swedish police silenced it down, although it is not yet excluded. The most probable fire cause is that a light bulb broke in the stairwell.



For most of the Swedish population the blaze in Gothenburg is becoming more and more of a closed chapter in their book of life, but hardly no one will easily forget what happened. Probably we have all learned a valuable lesson and next time we go to a disco or similar, I dar...
