Mio, My Son and Karlsson-on-the-Roof: a study of the English translation

This essay examines differences and variations in the English translations of the Swedish children's novels Mio, min Mio and Lillebror och Karlsson på taket, by Astrid Lindgren. The translation is made by Marianne Turner. The SL (source language) text and the TL (target language) text have been read parallel and deviations between the two versions have bee noted. To begin with, the essay deals with translation theory and the adaptation of children's literature. In the third chapter, the adaptation of names of various kinds (personal, fictitious, geographical etc.) and the adaptation of food, buildings, flora and fauna in the novels are presented and discussed. The fourth chapter deals with alterations, deletions, purifications and additions made in the examined novels. Finally, some of the metaphors and similes found are divided into groups and analysed. The conclusion of the study is that the translations of the two novels do not differ to any significant degree from the original SL texts.
