It’s time for Harry’s third year on Hogwarts School for witchcraft and wizard. This year will be more excited and harder than the former two years. It is now things are starting to happen, strange things. Many mysteries are about to be revealed and you’ll soon find out what, after you’ve read this book review.

It is now allowed for the third year students to leave the campus and visit the nearby wizard’s village Hogsmead. But to go there, you need permission from your parents and Harry’s parents are unfortunately dead so he has to ask his uncle Mr. Dursley to sign the permission. Of course his uncle don’t want to sign it. So Harry has to use a spell on him to make him sign it. But something goes wrong and he flees away and hopes that the Ministry of Magic won’t expel him from Hogwarts. After all, it is forbidden to use magic outside the magic world.

Harry was able to get to the wizards in London and he was forgiven. He also met his best friends Ron and Hermione that are ready for a new year at Hogwarts. They also learn that a convict has escaped from the most feared magician’s prison ever, Azkaban. Sounds horrible, right? Well, it is horrible.
The prisoner, also called Sirius Black was convicted for the murder on Harry’s parents. Now they think that Sirius has escaped to claim his revenge on Harry for what he has done to Voldemort.
Azkaban has also heard that Sirius is headed to Hogwarts. So they decided to send their Azkaban guardians even called Dementors. The Dementors are not human; they are some kind of horrible creature. They are terrifying and they make Hogwarts ice cold and chilly. When they’re around, Hogwarts is like a graveyard.

Even though Harry got his permission to go to Hogsmead, the staff won’t let him. They say that the only safe place for Harry at the moment is Hogwarts. Now that Sirius is after Harry, it isn’t safe for him to travel away. The Dementors from Azkaban are busy with searching for Sirius. They are searching all around Hogwarts and other places too at the same time. The Dementors really scare the pupils of Hogwarts and the headmaster of Hogwarts; Dumbledore requires that Azkaban remove the guards immediately.
Of course, Azkaban cannot do that. They have to find Sirius.

In the meantime, Harry, Ron and Hermione have to go on with their studies and the Quidditch games for Harry. But Ron is getting really angry with Hermione because of her new cat. Her cat is attacking Ron’s mouse Scabers all the time and Hermione doesn’t do anything about it. So it is pretty chilly between those two and as usual, Harry tries to make them friends again.

It seems like it’s a tradition to have one new Dark Arts teacher every year. Guess what, there’s one new this year too. He is a very special Dark Arts teacher called professor Lupin. The special thing with him is that he really is a good teacher and not a bad guy. You remember that the Dark Arts teacher in the first book was a bad guy and the Dark Arts teacher in the second book was incompetent? Well, this Dark Arts teacher seems to know everything.

Harry became a good friend with Lupin and each time he had something on his mind, he could go to Lupin. And there was a big problem for Harry. Every time he came near the Dementors, the horror in his mind was unleashed in the form of when his mother died. He could hear her scream when she protected Harry from Voldemort and died. And each time, he fainted. Making all the boys and girls laugh at him, especially Drako Malfoy. But with the help of Lupin, he could fight off that feeling. Making him immune from the Dementors.

Harry has also noticed that professor Snape really dislikes Lupin, and Harry really doesn’t know why. And whenever Harry find something mysterious or something that isn’t quite right, then he needs to find out why it is like it is. That’s typical to Harry.

Later on in the book, Harry finds out that when it’s full moon, professor Lupin becomes a werewolf. Harry thinks that’s why professor Snape dislikes professor Lupin.
In the end of the book, things really start to happen.

Harry finds out that Sirius Black isn’t a murder and in fact he is Harry’s godfather. Harry also gets to know who really betrayed his father. It was Ron’s mouse Scabers. In fact, Ron’s mouse is a human, a man called Peter Pettigrew. Peter, Lupin, Sirius and Harry’s dad James were all best friends when they were children and went at the same school, Hogwarts. Each one of them had the ability to be an animal.

So it was Peter Pettigrew that betrayed James Potter. He told Voldemort where Harry’s parents were hiding so that Voldemort could kill them. Directly after the killing of James, Peter transformed into a mouse and disappeared. Making everybody believe that Peter also died. They had to find a scapegoat so Sirius was blamed for everything. Peter became Ron’s familiar at Hogwarts, but with the name Scabers. That’s why the mouse has lived so long. It lives as long as a human and of course, Ron didn’t know anything about this.

Sirius and Lupin took the mouse Scabers and made it transform into Peter. But in the end, Peter fled away and disappeared again. Everything ended happily though. Sirius – Harry’s godfather – told Harry that he could live at his place on the holidays whenever he liked.

But now you maybe wonder why Snape disliked Lupin? And why he also disliked Harry?
Well, when they were children, the age of Harry, Ron and Hermione. Snape got lured in to visit the tree that you may remember in the second book? That tree was created to protect Lupin’s secret hole when he transformed into a werewolf. So he was lured into the tree to see Lupin when he became a werewolf, and if you got near him when he transformed you could be killed in the worst case. James Potter prevented it before he was killed and that’s why he disliked Harry and Lupin. He disliked Lupin because of the creature he is and he disliked Harry because he thought that James were the one to lure him. But he was the one that actually saved him. So Snape let his anger get out on Harry. But after all these events, Harry got closer to everybody, especially Snape. And Lupin got closer with Snape too. But unfortunately, Lupin couldn’t continue as a Dark Arts teacher. That’s too bad!

My opinions
Well, this book is very big and I can’t go into details on everything. I may have missed something, but it’s hard to get everything into one book review.
I have already read the Swedish version but when I read this English version I liked the book more than the Swedish version. When I read the English version it seemed like I got to know the characters a bit more. Because when I read the exact words of Rowling, then it’s easier to live into t...
