BOOKREVIEW: THE X-FILES: GROUD ZERO

I chose this book because I was reding it at the time we were supposed to choose books. Thw book is a novel written by Kevin J. Anderson and he has also written the successful Star Wars novels, for example "Young Jedi Knights" . The number of pages in the book is 292. The book is based on the characters from the tv serie "the X- files".

MAIN CHARACTERS

There are two main characters, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully and they are two FBI agents who specialize in unexplained phenomena and investigate the x-files, strange and inexplicable cases that the FBI does not want to be solved. Fox Mulder is a man is the thirties, he is tall and has short, dark brown hair. He believes in supernatural phenomena, such as UFOs and aliens. He has a calm personality and he thinks alot.
Dana Scully is a woman in the thirties and she is quite short and has red hair to the shoulders. She doesn’t believe in the supernatural, she believes that everything has a logical and natural explanation. She is also a doctor. Her personality is also very calm and thinking. Both Dana and Fox are very intelligent and they work very professionally together, even though there are conflicts about if the supernatural exists or not. None of them have a boyfriend or a girlfriend, but there are no lovestory between them.

PLOT

The book starts at the Teller Nuclear Research Facility in California, USA. The nuclear researcher Dr. Gregory dies in a mysterious way; he is full of radioactivity when they find the corpse of him and so is the whole room he lies in. Because of the unexplained cause of death, Mulder and Scully are hastily called in. While they investigate the death of Dr. Gregory, another strange case of death is happening. This time it is in a missile control bunker in a air force base in California and Captain Mesa and Captain Louis is in it. They are in control of nuclear weapons and can start a Armageddon if they only push a few buttons...
Anyway, they get order to aim at a target in the Marshall islands and just as they are going to launch the nuclear weapons, the lights go out. At first they don’t worry about it , because they have emergency controls, but they don’t seem to work. Instead, it’s completely dark. It starts to get hot and they begin to here whirlwinds of vengeful whispers and evil voices. The last thing they see is light and heat rush through the cracks in the walls. The death of the two captains seem to be related to the death of Dr. Gregory because the corpses looks the same; burned and full of radioactivity, so Mulder and Scully begin to try and find the connection. At first they don’t have a single clue about what it may be. But the connection is, of course, that they all were in touch with nuclear in some way and they thought it was a good thing. The two FBI agents finds out that Dr. Gregor was in charge of a nuclear test on a atoll, Enika atoll, in the western pacific fifty years ago and all the islanders died and before his death he was working on an illegal project called Bright Anvil- a new type of nuclear explosive that has all the destructive power of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs, but with a new design that leaves virtually no radioactive fallout and he was planning to test it at the same atoll that the test fifty years ago took place. Now it seems like someone wants to stop that. Mulder and Scully contact an old classmate to Scully, Miriel Bremen, who works against nuclear weapons. They ask if she knows anything about the case and she says she don’t but she is hiding something...
To more cases of deaths happens; a woman in Maryland and a man out in the desert in New Mexico, both connected to the Bright Anvil project. While Mulder and Scully are looking for answers, a man in the fifties are listening to spirits and ghosts from the past...
Its Ryan Kamida, the only survivor from Enika atoll, a survivor nobody knows about, because the test was a secret and he was only a child at the time and the US government didn’t think he would remember anything as he grew up. But he does and the spirits of his dead relatives are telling him to get revenge on the people who are responsible for their death...
As the book goes on, Mulder and Scully comes closer to the truth and I don´t think I can reveal so much more of the story now, but in the end of the book the agents are out in the western pacific at Enika atoll and some really strange things begin to happen...

TIME & PLACE

The book takes place mostly in California in the Teller Nuclear Research Facility and the FBI headquarters, but also in other american states and in the Pentagon. The end of the book takes place out in the sea, at Enika atoll. Its written in present time.

LANGUAGE

I think the language was quite difficult to read in the beginning and I used a dictionary quite alot , but after a while it got easier to understand, when I got used to the way the author writes. I bought the book in England so I didn´t expect an easy book and I saw it as a challange to read the book, to prove to myself that I could do it. I don´t think it was a bad thing that the language was difficult in the beginning, because when I had read the book I had learned alot; new words and how to use the new words in sentences.

MY OPINION

I think the bookwas really, really good. I watch the X-files on tv and its really thrilling and I didn´t expect the book to be just as exiting, but it was! Once I started reading it, I couldn´t stop. I like the way the author writes; you get to follow every step of the two FBI agents and you get to know what is happening every single minute of the story. I really like the main characters, especially Fox Mulder, because he is always completely cool and never worries about anything and he always has a spooky theory that some supernatural monster or alien are behind it all and even though everyone says he is crazy, he stands for what he believes in. The story is really good too and it takes place at quite ...
