THE WIDE WINDOW

The dreadful Presentation
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series of books written by Lemony Snicket. I read “Book the third, the wide window”. Lemony Snicket has written a long series about the Baudelaire orphans starting with “Book the first, The bad beginning”. The series contains twelve books and they are all about the pain, misery and misadventure Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire experienced during their childhood.
These are the unfortunate books written by Lemony Snicket:
1. The bad beginning
2. The reptile room
3. The wide window
4. The miserable mill
5. The austere academy
6. The ersatz elevator
7. The vile village
8. The hostile hospital
9. The carnivorous carnival
10. The slippery slope
11. The grim grotto
12. The penultimate peril

A very boring summary
After the horrible fire in the Baudelaire’s home where the orphans’ parents died they were taken care of by Mr Poe, the bank man of the town. He was a kind-hearted man . He had the responsibility to take the Baudelaire’s to their closest family member. In their case it was the evil Count Olaf, who we in the first book get to know as the person behind the arson that killed Mr and Mrs Baudelaire. But that’s what happened in the first book. Now am I going to tell you about the dreadful events of “book the third”.
It takes place in modern time somewhere in the country of America by the Lake Lachrymose, a very small society just by the intimidating depths of the lake. In the small town there is a high hill, and on the top of that hill there was a small boxy square with a peeling white door, the house didn’t seem to be bigger than the taxi that brought the youngsters there.
In that house their aunt Josephine Anwhistle had lived alone for many years, ever since her beloved Ike died in a terrible accident in the lake. He got eaten up by the Lake Lachrymose leeches. Now you may think that I must have read wrong, but I’m sorry to tell you that they are just as frightening as they sound. The Lachrymose leeches is known for being harmless unless you have been eating in the closest hour, you see the lachrymose leeches can smell food from over a kilometres distance and once they have smelled you, you can start saying your good byes they will swim right at you and eat you on the spot.
That’s the leeches, now back too Aunt Josephine. Josephine Anwhistle is a very special lady not only because she is deathly afraid of nearly everything but she also think that grammar is the greatest joy of life and I would not be surprised if she was the only one on this planet who had that interest, if she heard someone say something grammatical incorrect she was right there to right your mistake. For example she was afraid of the stove so she never ate hot meals only chilled cucumber soup and cool lime stew, she was also afraid of opening the doors by turning the doorknob because she thought it would shatter into a million pieces and hit her eye.
When Violet, Klaus and Sunny moved in with Aunt Josephine they believed their misery had ended for good and that they could go back to a normal life as soon as possible and that they had seen the hideous face of Count Olaf for the last time.
They were dead wrong, it was far from the last time they had seen him, he was about to appear the very next day. And even in this story he killed their guardian just to steal the Baudelaire fortune.
After the youngsters had done some grocery shopping with Aunt Josephine and after they met Captain Sham (Count Olaf in disguise), he forced Aunt Josephine to write a suicide note where she told the police and Mr Poe that she left the children to Captain Sham and everything that goes with them, which means the fortune as well. Josephine may be strange but she was not stupid, instead of taking her own life she escaped and left the note she had written in the house library and threw a footstool out the wide window in the library. The note had a hidden message in it which the youngsters did not see at first, but then Klaus remembered a book he once read about code reading, so after a few moments of studding he understood the secret message; it said “Curdle Cave”. Klaus Baudelaire was a very intelligent young boy who loved to read and the surprising thing about him is that he remembered every thing he ever read.
The youngsters hurried down to the Damocles dock, stole a sailboat from Captain Shams’ boat rentals and sailed away towards Curdle Cave, the problem was neither of them knew how to handle a boat, but thanks to Klaus intelligence the managed to sail their way to Curdle Cave where they found Aunt Josephine.
So there they were thinking that everything would be just fine sailing away from Curdle Cave. What Violet and Klaus did not know was that Aunt Josephine had eaten a banana just before they arrived to the cave, so the leeches came within a minute. They realized that they wouldn’t survive unless they called for help, but who will hear three children and an old lady in the middle of a hurricane, they had to invent some sort of alarm or signal so the people on land would notice them. Violet put up her hair in a ribbon to keep her hair out of her eyes just as she always does when she was inventing things. You see Violet Baudelaire was one of the cleverest children that will ever walk on this earth. She had inventing things as long as she could remember and this was her time to shine. In just a short moment she had invented an alarm and fire arrangement which also saved their lives. Someone had seen the fire alarm but I doubt they were glad to see who it was…

The ridiculous message of the unfortunate tale
I believe Lemony Snicket wrote these books to inform everyone that tings does not always turns out the way you want them to, they may not even start the way you want. Mr Snicket seems to be a very smart man with a strange sense of humour. What I believe he’s trying to say with these books is that no matter what happens it can get a lot worse than you will ever imagine but it will bring something good as well. You will learn to appreciate the ones who love you and that they will always be there no matter what. They will love you no matter what. It is not about having what you want. It’s wanting what you already got.
The story is also about greed. and that the bright minds of the Baudelaire’s time after time oversmart Count Olaf and his evil plans. The story tells us that in the end crimes do not pay and you should listen to what children have to say. Children’s instincts should be trusted by the elderly.
In the end I believe that the author wants people to know that the war against evil is constantly ongoing. And that the good people will never win and we have to keep fighting against the evilness to keep it as far away as possible. That is why the constant war between the good side and the bad side will never end. We can not let them win!
My meaningless opinion
What I like the most about the book is Mr Snickets way of writing and I like the way he builds up the story. The language in this book is not very difficult to understand and it is very amusing to read. Everything is so horrible and dreadful. Even the food is cold and uneatable!
In the beginning of the book the youngsters are sitting on their suitcases at the Damocles Dock and the book ends the same way after the kindhearted Mr Poe once again has failed to make life pleasant and filled with love for the Baudelaire’s. In between I enjoyed reading about the unfortunate events they had to experience and in the same time the author made me feel with them. I can not understand and probably I will never know how it feels to loose both your parents, but I know the feeling of being all alone and just as ev...
