Toula Portokalos is 30 years old, Greek, and unmarried. Mostly she is spending her time working in her family’s restaurant, Dancing Zorba’s in Chicago.
Her father, Gus, is proud over their heritage and to be Greek. He wants Toula to get married to a nice and healthy Greek man, so they can produce nice and healthy Greek children.
But Toula is looking for something more in life, than just produce Greek babies and cook Greek food. She wants to go her own way and do what she is truly longing for.
Toula’s mother, Maria, understands that her daughter wants to do something more than just being a waitress on the restaurant and she willingly helps Toula to convince Gus to let her start taking a computer class at college. Thanks to the computer courses Toula gets enough knowledge to take over her aunt’s travel agency, where she seems to like it much more than serving coffee on the restaurant. This is also where she meets Ian Miller, a high school English teacher. He is what her father would call a xeno – foreigner or stranger - and absolutely not thinkable having a relationship with. But Toula falls in love with Ian and they start to date secretly for a while before her family finds out about it.
As expected, Toulas father doesn’t like the idea of her dating a non – Greek and forbids her
to see him again. But Toula and Ian''''s love is strong and they keep seeing each other.
And soon Ian asks her to marry him, and of course she says yes. But, how are they going to make Tolas family to accept their marriage?
First Mr Portokalos has to learn to accept Ian, Ian has to learn to accept Toulas big and different family and Toula has to learn to accept herself.

Toula is not very satisfied with herself and how she looks, and I think she is ashamed of her family and heritage. Her personality doesn''''t fit the normal frame for Greek women.
When she was a young girl she had to give up many dreams she had and many things that she wanted to do, because they weren''''t apropriate for a Greek girl.
Instead of being a member at Brownies, Toula had to go to Greek school and instead of a normal sandwich for lunch she had to eat moussaka.
When she meets Ian several years later, she is still ashamed for being different. Mostly she is ashamed over her big and very loud family. But I think that Ian makes her realize that there''''s nothing wrong with being a bit different from the big crowd. By loving her and be her friend he shows her that she is worth being loved and that she is all the things she envy the ''''''''normal American girls'''''''' to be.

The language in the film is both american spoken by inhibitans and by Greek people.
So it''''s many things that aren''''t correct, and that''''s one of the main things that the author use to make funny jokes; wrong pronounciations and grammar.
It''''s not very hard to understand what they are saying and it''''s not so many complicated words.
That''''s at least what I think.
The actors and actresses are mostly good, but there''''s some of them who''''s not quite ''''''''authentic''''''''.
I think it''''s a good film with many things worth taking time to think about. It''''s a warm and genuin story about things that happens everyday all over the world. So I absolutly recomend people in all ages to see it.

I think that the people making the film wanted us to understand that there is no such thing as normal. You should be proud of who you are and where you come from. Your family is a part of you and how you are, so you shouldn''''t be ashamed of them. But you shouldn''''t let other people decide who you are an...
